Excuse my ignorance but what it the difference between a villa, apartment and a flat.

A villa is an independent house with or without a compound wall depending on whether you're staying in an enclosed compund already.
If you are in an enclosed compund already there is a possibility that the villa will be an independant house without a compund wall.
In villas like these you could have facilities like a pool/gym etc like Lacey said.
A flat is a small house in a building with other flats or houses.
The building is usually called an apartment or sometimes apartment is the same as flat.
Its like a bunch of flats constitue an apartment.
A villa is more like a house (here you can get a stand alone villa or a villa in a compound which is like its own community within walls, usually has facilities like pool and gym and has 24 hr security), an apartment is more of a smaller dwelling usually in a tall building and a flat is usually a small dwelling in a block of flats if you know what I mean....(as opposed to a tall building?)
That is what they are in Australia anyway ! I have only been here two weeks so someone correct me if it's different here... lots of things are different here ;)
