What to bring from UK to make Doha homely!

By macavela

I am relocating to Doha this August for work. I am familiar with the general style of apartments in Doha (spacey, loads of tiles, not very cosy!) and I'm keen to make my place really nice.

What sort of things do you recommend I take over with me? What I am getting at is I don't want to waste luggage/shipping on items easily available in Doha. Or if items aren't available or are very expensive I would rather take them from the UK.

Are there any shops you'd recommend in Doha for kitting out my place with Ikea-ish style throws, candels, pictures, etc.

Thanks!

Furniture is expensive here compared to UK. If you buy furniture here and have it delivered to you, they do not have time slot deliveries. So you will literally have to wait in your house or apartment until they ring to say they are outside your place. We did get some IKEA-ish furniture and some small furnishings from Homes R Us and Homecentre. Other than the wait for them to deliver it, they were fantastic. Came in flat packs and the delivery team sets them up for you. Plenty of choices re the small furnishings like throws, candles, pictures etc. Available in many shops in City Centre mall, Landmark mall, Hyatt Plaza, The Mall (D Ring rd) and plenty of furniture shops in Salwa Rd (mostly expensive but there are many many furniture and furnishing shops there. The shops such as ID Design, The One, White Company, all those small furnishings you might want to look at.

There is M&S, BHS and Debinhams here. Dubai is a £100 round trip if you can't find what you want here.

If I was you I would get out here first and then decide what you need to turn your house into a home.

Furniture wise you can get most here it real depends on your taste, just bring the small things with big things and soft furnishings you can get from here.

To bring a pet to Doha is absolutely senseless. Housing not pet friendly and the majority of residents also not pet lovers. Too many stray and abandoned cats and dogs already in Doha with a few expat organisations trying their utmost to care for animals. I've never experienced ONLY BRING YOUR PET IF THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION!!!

Tigabaguio, do you have a pet????

yea sure... the Home Center sells kind of IKEA style stuff and more. I would say you can buy mostly everything here in Doha. If you get free shipping then it might be worth while to ship your favourites from home to make you feel at home.

Good luck and welcome to Doha.
