By Cat Buys

Hi there
i have been in Doha for a week been looking at all sorts of cars ...
I have noticed all or most second hand cars have extremely high kilometres already used.
Been told buying new might be the best option. though as driving here is very different from london i am wanting to buy something quite inexpensive....
what are your suggestions in terms of makes v's costs?

thanks

..am now working on my exit procedure though am not sure when it will be approved..wish i knew someone from the labor ministry if worse comes to worst..

..better ask the QLers now in Qatar regarding the car transport..i myself am not confident on the roads especially a long trek...

..have you calculated the distance and time..?..are you familiar with the routes..?..i limit my travel to places am very familiar with until such time am conversant in Arabic which happens to be the only language known by the police...

From the sounds of things, we are on the 'same path' relocating from Saudi to Doha. When do you think you will get into Qatar? I'm thinking of bringing my car with me, exporting from Saudi into Qatar - what do you think?

to disappoint you people but am nowhere near what you may be thinking. i still make sure i have more than sufficient braking distance at the front and i still step aside when a vehicle gets too close to my behind..but, if the road ahead me is free, i just take a glance at all the models of the vehciles on my right..my horn is still slightly used, reserved for those unexpected ignoramus who suddenly apppears without looking around first when coming out of a park state or when turning right or simply not knowing what defines right of way..nevertheless, am a defensive driver and i yield, most of the time, if i can help it...

..it is not surprising, though, to find drivers here, who turns off their headlights during the night and then suddenly turns them on high when they're right there at your back - those are the near near-misses that am always on the look-out if i had to go out at night..

..i know am going to miss my engine which is there when i need it the most..this kind of responsiveness may not be working on an automatic, i tend to believe...

though i still thing the land cruisers and the toyota's in general tend to be really violent drivers ....crazy to say the least ... take no consideration as to whom might be in the car - children or not ... go right up behind you flash press the horn and intimidate people horribly .... i know we look into the back mirror often but sometimes i wonder where they show up from ...its just out of the blue

Those single cab pick ups are mental! I used to think it was the drivers of the white Land Cruiser / the Camry / and any taxi driver that was mad - but the boys who drive around in those pick ups really take no prisoners....they can shift a bit too...

..WK..actually, it was an impression i got reading through so many threads..one of the reasons given was no respect if you're not on a 4wd..here in saudi, i sometimes tell my friends not to buy those big 4wds especially after overtaking them on the highway on my single-cab pickup (jokingly, of course)

..but, then, again i'm reserving my decision on what to do once i get there..for now i can say, i had enough practice on KSA roads and maybe that would be adequate to survive in Doha..

soltero yes it is possible to survive without 4x4, actually depending on the type of work you are into, it is possible to survive without a car all together as well.

Why do you think one needs 4x4 to survive Doha?

I survived for an year here without a car and the next year without a 4x4. Most probably I will get a 4x4 in my third year here but interested to hear your reasons.

Driving in Saudi? I came here from UK and was shocked ( and still am ! ) over the standards of driving here in Saudi - is the driving any better / worse than in Qatar?

Bahrain seems very civilised, was hoping Doha might be a bit calmer than the idiots on the Riyadh roads.

..would it be safe to assume the risks are the same driving in saudi and qatar? here, we have a daily dose of road accidents in various forms..and not just with locals..i've had one when a local chose to ignore a red light...

..then, it really is still possible to survive Doha or Qatar using an ordinary car..?..

im usually ok driving dont have a prob with the roads ... small or big doesnt phaze me ... i dont intend to spend much on a car so if i get a 4x4 its all good if not ... im not bothered ... :)

for the time being it looks as though i am getting a 4x4 just waiting to go to dubai at the end of the month and return to then go buy it :) fingers crossed all goes well :) :) :)

I usually do car racing have done it in portugal and in the UK this is also something i would like to look into but understand being a woman might be a disadvantage for me in this country anyone know much around this?

just out of curiosity, why no one suggested buying a 4x4 or bigger vehicles when in other threads i've read you're at a big disadvantage using only a car? can one really survive with a car? or just some specific type of cars?

I would recommend what ever car you buy should have an Excellent Air Condition. During the summer time temperature will go high as 50c. that will be up to you to decide if your going for 4 cylinder or higher. fuel is cheaper then water here.

Never bother about the kilometers... since there is no value for fuel in this land. So people always take the vehicle to go anywhere and ofcourse the climate is also a factor for more kilo's. Better check the technical side, proven service records and select one from a few...

For Example 'm covering 5000-7000Kms per month aprox. But it will get proper service ontime... and if you are looking for a cheap car, and if you like go for KIA, nissan, chevy,...

You can always find less kilos covered Peogeot, Fiat, Lancia, Alfa, Reno like cars for a better price... if you can maintain it well, i'm sure you will love those cars esp peogeot/alfa romoeo.

Generally 10,000kms per year is low, 20,000 kms per year an average and 30,000+ is high. Based on the model year look out mileage covered based on the above.

For both my cars, I/wife cover around 10,000 kms per year - so my mileage covered for the 3 year vehicles is around 30,000 kms.

Depending on the age, it will be difficult to find very low mileage cars but there are some around - keep searching
