Where's good to live

Hi. I am currently negotiating to come and work in Doha.
I'll be bringing my wife and our 7 month old daughter.
We are a British / Canadian couple in our mid 30s.

A few questions:
Where are some good areas to look for villa rentals? Places with good restaurants, ideally close to the water, with a good mix of expats and locals?

Are there some good organisations or clubs that we should join to kick off some social life?

I've been reading about the driving issues and am a little apprehensive. What options are there? Are taxis reliable? Is the idea of hiring a driver common or very luxurious?

Does anyone have any good leads on part time daycare for my daughter (just to give her mum a couple of 'me' hours a day)

Thanks for your help

I've been here in Doha for just under a month. My advice is to start out in a full service flat - I stayed at Ezdan Towers (Tower 1) for this past month, and thought that overall it was quite good. They have 1 bedrooms with kitchen and twice weekly cleaning serrvice for about 12,500QR/mo - which is pretty darned expensive, but it's close to everything and having a place that is used to catering to Westerners is a nice buffer for those first few crazy weeks of adjustment.

I've already signed a 2 year lease on a new 3 bedroom flat in Al Saad, near Royal Plaza Mall and paid 12,000 QR for the place. Plumbing issues, and a moldy/mildew smell have caused me a ton of grief the past two weeks, but I think we may have finally solved all the problems - just be sure to walk through your permanent place VERY carefully. Turn on all faucets, run washer, fill bathtub, etc. -- also ask the rental agent how many other Westerners are in the building, if that is important to you.

Feel free to PM me and I can refer you to the agency I used, as well as a couple other contacts that could help you out.

Godd luck in your move!

Hi,

take it easy,

one by one,

all what you want and need is possible...

Except taxis..that is an issue,

if you are paid well, then most possibly they will provide you with housing,

if not, then it is , as I may say totaly on how much you whant to spend to get all what you pointed out,

There are several clubs that meet some or most of what you want

again , money money money

The more you can spend the more that you can get..

Cheers
