WOMEN LIVING IN QATAR

emayl
By emayl

hi there! im a newbie here in QL.

last february, i was in dubai and last march, i stayed in Kuwait. Though both are Arab/Muslim nations, there i witnessed a BIG difference especially for expats living in both countries. In Dubai, women especially non-muslims can dress up even in shorty shorts and minis and tank tops that are see-through. in Kuwait, it is still not accepted and "forbidden" even just a sleeveless blouse.

I hopefully will stay too in Doha. but prior to that, i just would wanna know what is Doha like in terms of dressing for women? will it be open and liberated as Dubai or as strict and all covered up like in Kuwait?

Please please send me feedbacks. Thank you.

It's funny when I read that people say 'COnservative' dressing.

As long as you're not wearing bikinis on the street (beaches are fine), mega hi-ride hotpants in the malls, and tiny tube tops, you're fine.

I've seen people in all sorts of clothes. Nobody cares in Qatar. You might get some looks, but they're usually from guys looking because you're hot! Not looking because they think OMG! I wish she was wrapped up.

Hi There,

I went to Doha at the end of May/ early June this year and although it wasn't the hottest months yet it was still hot for me. I wore respectful and conservative clothing such as tshirts and pants or skirts that were down to the knee and didn't wear low cut tops. I am blonde so I received enough attention as it was, however I did want want to cause any problems.

Everyone was lovely and I enjoyed my time. I am considering moving over next year.

Best of luck with it all.

To everyone who answered my query and gave me insight of what and how Doha is like especially for expat women dressing up, A BIG THANKS!

now, it seems a bit clear that Doha may be a bit more like Kuwait than as liberated as Dubai where you can walk the by the malls, beach, even in private villas in shorts and skirts above knee and people do not mind at all really.

Nyways, I go to and believe on what you guys say that give some respect to what people are accustomed to in the country where I will be staying. I will be doing that.

Shukran!

Cover the shoulders, cover the knees, and use your judgement. If I'm going to an AWA function at one of the hotels, I might wear something sleeveless. Going to the souq, hospital, or govt dept..... probably not.

I see more and more women wearing revealing clothing nowadays, but that doesn't mean it's appropriate here!

Shorts and skirts should be long, like to the knee.  Spaghetti straps? Bring a long-sleeved shirt to throw over it. (It's so dang cold in the malls you need long sleeves anyway)!

Lucky we are here in qatar and not in Soudi, where all females have to wear ABAYA to go out of their home.  Here, we are lucky, as some of our frnd'z mentioned above we have more freedom than Kuwait and soudi but less than dubai. For Doha to become like dubai - a long distance to cover

Let it start with liberation of Labour Laws - -

What do u say?

you need to balance between kuwait and dubai. so basically in the middle. thats Qatar/Doha.

All good with me thanks!

Judging from the stares my wife gets even when she's dressed conservatively, I think some of the guys eyes and tongues might literally fall out of their heads if someone "let it all hang out".

Now I wonder what that would provoke here...LOL...how you doing buddy...by the way

By tallg• 14 Apr 2008 07:59

The general guidelines I've read about for women say that you should ensure you're covered from your shoulders down to your knees, i.e. a top with some form of sleeve and not too low cut, and shorts/skirt/trousers that go below your knee.

Personally I think it's good to stick to these guidelines out of respect for the conservative nature of the country you're in, but you'll see lots of people who don't. As people have said, you'll get reactions whatever you wear, but you may provoke stronger and angrier reactions if you "let it all hang out".

Ofcourse buddy, ofcourse why not, provided I get my equal share of the partnership...lol...

And yes, sometimes it just takes to be a female to get attracted to...(infact it is only a Female to which the attraction goes over...Lol)...

And yes, I also demand a partition in QL, with me being a moderator, DaRude handles one section, I handle one, and Smokey handles one...

Only a few gorgeous ladies like Scarlett and a few others will be given accesss to all the three sections...lol...(o how can I forget Corne, and Jauntie...lol)

Scarlette i was merely stating the facts of what would happen if she were to actually dress up that way...u will attract more attention with a mini skirt than u would with anything else right? but true u just need to be female to get the guys attention heck look at darude, ksarat and moi for that matter we are already honking at emayl lol

Scarlett: O well, I just hope your Frenchie girl-friend comes in dressed like in what she would normally wear, and I meet her only in a place where that is alright, I wouldnt want to meet her wearing a local dress...O hell no...LOL...

you don't have to dress like a hooker to get honked at, hollered at, approached or stared at...just be female. Smoke...you need to be with some of the ladies who dress appropriately and watch the typical reactions..its not just those that dress a bit provocatively.

Qatar is a bit more conservative than Dubai, but wear what you would that makes you comfortable. I personally don't think wearing miniskirts is respectful here to the muslims and locals...and same with showing midsections or very low cut tops...

BUT..that being said, don't expect NOT to draw attention from men if you don't wear all that..because no matter WHAT you wear, fully covered in western gear, you WILL get stared at and approached. But its all harmless for the most part.

Qatar is conservative.  It is not conservative like Saudi, but it is a million years away from being like Dubai.  Don't expect to wear tight or revealing clothes in public without consequence.  you will get a range of reactions.  men will stare at you either sexually or angrily.  local women may approach you and tell you to dress properly.  you will get many, many overt sexual advances from men.  i would advise you to leave the mini skirts at home and enjoy them where you won't have to worry about the reactions you will face.

welcome to doha and I hope you enjoy your stay here :)

if you don't mind being stared down then you can wear whatever you like..

usually it's only in bars/clubs that its normal for a girl to wear short shorts or skirts. However, i noticed that in malls...it would be wiser to just wear jeans or a long skirt with a sleeveless top rather than wear shorts with a tshirt...

I just came to Doha about 1 month, I was in Kuwait 2 years. I did not see any problem like U said while I was there..women wearing the clothes that they like to wear even short and Tank top..even people not so happy to see maybe..but they do that..

I have many friends that not wearing abaya muslims and non muslims..They have no problem with clohtes.but it is still better to follow the custom in the country U stay at..

Doha hummmm don't know so much but I think not so much like Dubai..Good luck in Qatar...

lol darude u already have ur eyes set on this one huh...are u going to show her the ways of Qatar? Anyways i say u can wear whatever u want as long as its modest and u dont look like a hooker walking the streets coz then u just might get honked at, teased at, guys walking up to u offering u money for special services etc etc. but hey u can always dress the way u want when ur going out with Darude, Smokey, and Ksarat for coffee...though not at the same time grrrrrrr
