Multilingual children …Struggling!
Hi Mamas and Papas…
I have been doing some research about bringing up children in a multilingual environment and, to be honest, there seems to be very little information about the difficulties that some times we might face.
Most experts favour the one parent one language approach, but I’m my case I am not doing it right. I’m speaking two languages to my little one and struggling with some things…
She understands both languages, at least 80% of the time. Comprehension is not much of an issue, although she understands language A better than B.
She favours one language over the other and insists in replying with Language A when I’m actually speaking to her in language B. How can I encourage her to stick to the language that I’m talking to her?
She mixes words from the different languages when making sentences. She only manages three words sentences, which \given her age (two years) is normal. I.E “want more agua” . Isn’t that a sign of confusion?
I have many more questions, but I’d love to learn about your experiences and how you manage it with your children.
