Ibadah in Ramadan

Aisha-Taweela
By Aisha-Taweela

“Ramadhan has arrived to you, a month of barakah (blessings), Allaah envelops you (with His mercy & blessings), so He descends His mercy, erases the sins, answers your du’aas, and He watches your competition in virtuous deeds and He boasts in front of the angels about you. So let Allaah see the best from you, for truly, the miserable one is he who is deprived from the mercy of Allaah (in this month)." [Tabaraanee, Saheeh]

Qur'aan In Ramadhan

Ramadhan is the month of Qur’aan. It is mustahabb to read Qur’aan a great deal during Ramadaan and to strive to complete it. (islamqa.com)

Devote yourselves completely to Qur’aan. Do it whole day. Before Fajr, after Fajr, after 3Asr, before dhuhr, after 3Isha, whenever you get time. When one is not cooking or praying, she should be reading Qur’aan.

If you are working, do it between coffee/tea break, during free time; whenever it is humanly possible. Every available opportunity, spend it for Qur’aan. Don’t limit yourself.
Make big goals. If you can finish the whole tafseer in English, try to finish.
Keep a journal with you. Write what you benefit from.

How to attain the sweetness of reciting the Qur’aan:

Quick Tips:

Sit in a humble manner; in a state of wudoo'. Imagine you are sitting before Allaah & reciting to Him.
Remind yourself and try to feel that these are the words of your Lord, the Creator of the heavens and earth.
Begin with Istiaadah (seeking refuge with Allah from Shaytaan).
Read in a slow and melodious way.
Make sajdah at-tilaawah when you recite a verse of sujood.
When you read/recite aayah (verse) about Jannah, pause and ask for it. When you recite any aayah about the Hellfire, stop & seek refuge from it.
If the verse says to make tasbeeh, stop and make tasbeeh (subhanAllaah).

More Tips for non-Arabic speakers:

If you can read the Qur’aan, then read the ayah in Arabic then the translation in your language.
If you can’t read properly, then listen and repeat each verse after the tape. After completing 1 page, read the translation.
If you cannot recite Quraan at all, then beg Allaah to bless you with the ability to recite it fluently. You should listen to a Qur'aan tape/CD, then read the translation and then read the tafseer.

Taraweeh/Qiyaam Al-layl

Read & reflect on the virtues of قيام الليل (Qiyaam Al-layl). Try to go to the masjid where you feel more khushoo.

The virtues of Qiyaam (prayer at night) during Ramadaan

Go to the masjid quickly after Maghrib.
Follow the proper aadaab (manners of the masjid) [proper covering, no perfumes, du3aa on the way to masjid, du3aa upon entering the masjid).
If there is time for Isha prayer, read Qur’aan or do dhikr.
Make du3aa between Aazaan & iqaamah.

Du3aa In Ramadhan

Write down what you want from Allaah. Make a list of at least 30 du3aa.

For your duniyah, for your deen.
your husband, your children, your family
Ask Allaah to give you ikhlaas, to grant you laylatul Qadr.
Make du3aa for your aakhirah, to have easy hisaab, to enter jannah without hisaab.

What to do with this Du3aa list?

Focus on one duaa each day and repeat it at every accepted time of du3aa.

Between أذان (Adhaan) and اقامة (Iqaamah), in the sujood, last 3rd of the night, at the time of breaking the fast. Focus daily on one duaa.

Ø Take the most important du3aa from the list and repeat those during the last ten nights (each night) so that your du3aa can catch laylatul Qadr.

Dhikr (zikr)

Read the importance & virtues of doing dhikr.

Make a list of dhikr. Every day take one dhikr and keep on repeating it the whole day (or for two days). Read, reflect on what you are saying and intend the reward of that dhikr while doing it.

Sadaqah (charity)

Give as much sadaqah as you can, as the reward gets more during the month of ramadan.

Be generous, give without thinking. Give in secret as much possible. Give on a daily basis, or weekly whatever is easy for you. Give food to the poor & needy people & help those in need.

Last Ten Nights

Double and triple the amount of ibaadah during the last ten nights. Intensify the ibaadah you already are doing.

Try to sleep during the day (long nap) & be awake during the nights. If you can go to the masjid for qiyaam, do so. Avail the opportunity. Do not sleep specially on the odd nights when it can be the laylatul Qadr. Focus & repeat your important du3aa.

=> Sisters who are on حيض (menses) or نفاس (postnatal bleeding), they can do all the acts of worship like reading Qur’aan, making dhikr and du3aa except for praying. (remember ehtisaab, i.e., wanting the reward from Allaah).

Other 3Ibaadat in Ramadhan:

Pray the Dhuha prayer
2 rak3at of wudoo'.
Tahiyatul Masjid (2 rak3at)
Answer the aadhan
