Traffic in India vs traffic in Doha

Terramax
By Terramax

I was cursed here many times for being "racist" when I said that the biggest danger on the road are bus, truck and bike drivers from subcontinent.

Just watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjrEQaG5jPM

They come to Doha used to driving and walking like this - no lanes, no rules, no traffic lights, and continue behaving exactly the same way on the streets of Doha. Can't wait for the police to enforce the new traffic rules...

LOL...Jauntie,

Now with your post the forum gives the feeling of like 'completion'. Hey where have you been hiding so long?

Well, wise words and believe me everybody is just waiting for enforcement of these laws. I read that even those few decorative cameras on Corniche are also doing the trick.

Maybe it's been mentioned already, but it's all about the Road Rage here in Doha:

http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=173057&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16

"Road rage incidents on the rise as motorists lose their cool

Published: Sunday, 16 September, 2007, 01:28 AM Doha Time

MANY drivers in Qatar display a lack of regard for the law and contempt to other motorists on the road, a cross section of the public has said.

They said they are pinning their hopes on the new traffic law issued on August 7 and which is to be enforced on October 2 to see a substantial improvement in the current situation. The new law stipulates punishments like heavy fines and imprisonment for a number of traffic rule violations......"

I goes on to give a few ripe quotes from ex-pats also !!!

Anyone can get DL without going to driving school in India. And I am not kidding these are facts so accept them.

I was always taunted for our bad skills by British collegue (he is racist ofcourse), recently I have been to UK and learnt lot bout their driving lessons and how tough it is to get one DL. All Indians (UK) have nothing but to complain cos they have mastered this wrong art of driving for years.

Terramax watch our neighbors too

Anyways...bday was a decent one...as mentioned...went for a dinner with family friends...since it was Ramadan, a couple of my freinds cudnt show up...so had to decide to spend it with family freinds...but still it was a nice one...it was a good start to the new year...

Oryx: Well absolutely right by u saying that survival is te Key word...i was jus pointing out that sometimes everyone of us r forced to tack off the rules while driving...bcos we need to save our A Z Z ...rather than get driven over by the guy behind u...

Charan: Dude...i m quite sure i wasnt justifying anything here or stand up for them...all i m saying is while i do accept the fact that Indians or ppl from the Sub-continent do drive around tough...its quite unfair to only point that out at just the 1 community over and out...

Alexa: Champ, u r a great girl (i m sure yet hopeful...LOL Kiddin)...i didnt get serious with this topic at all yesterday...and regd the wanking n stuff...well to be really frank it was prmiraily aimed at someone else...but guess u fell into the category for a while...but now u dont...so in the good old words of a British Comedy "Mind your Language: A 1000 Apologies"...

I was jus saying...yes ppl from the sub-continent bring in their driving here to this part of the world...only for a fact that this place goes with the same flow on the roads...i was in Aus for a while and trust me ppl...there where the rules are observed strictly...noone went off the track other than drunk buggers...i m quite sure thats the case in most countries where the rules r striclty observed...but here its not like that...everyone drives crazy...so the Sub-continenters join the race simple...

And surely...i was chill yesterday..no serious werious at all...

ksarat - you better use the road properly in the 1st place before telling us what to do. Don't try to justify the dangerous driving pattern of most of the Indian workforce here.

Friend raj - Mother India has nothing to do with this problem here. I think she is really ashamed of the driving skills of most of her sons here

It is human nature to have a survival instinct.

I am going to be more wary of a scorpion than a butterfly...

I am going to be more cautious around a factor that in my experience has caused me harm... that isnt racism it is just plain common sense.

Now instead of blaming me... for my view point... why dont some people seek to improve their driving standards??? Because you won't solve anything by blaming others.

oh and another thing that really pisses me off is spitting.

it is disgusting and it is very unhealthy as it spreads TB etc which is coming very drug resistent.

so call me racist for complaining about that - or look at a way to educate people about hygiene practices for the benefit of all.

U said

guys i m sure even u ppl dont follow the rules here...tell me how many of u actually use the roads properly

Speak for yourself! I do -I follow the rules and use the roads properly.

I certainly don't:

use a mobile

cut up people

not signal

weave in and out of lanes

etc

LOL Alexa. So baedaebok, u might be one of the drivers I curse at lol, cause some people go on the fast lane yet drive like a snail! Or others go on the slow lane and drive really fast!

The thing I loved about Germany, is that left=fast, right=slow and people stuck to that rule!

By anonymous• 16 Sep 2007 20:48
anonymous

I try to drive everywhere @ 60kph (except on those roads where everyone is going faster and I need to keep up). This makes me safer. I have't had any accidents yet so I'm grateful.

Another way to avoid accidents: PRAY just before you move (the last thing you do before you move the car). Not only might you get divine help, it focuses your mind on the driving. Some people pray before they eat. Driving is more high stakes than eating so praying before driving seems like common sense.

Wow I didn't realize commenting on a particular nations driving skills was considered racist...I always more thought of it as a comment on the particular driving standards imposed by the governments of those countries. You can't drive properly if you are not taught to drive properly, the roads here are a prime example of that....Actually Karwa drivers are a prime example of that, both the Indian, Nepali and Phillipino Karwa drivers who are dragged over here and thrown behind the wheel of a car without any training or testing.

Saying India produces bad drivers is simply saying that India needs to improve it's driver training. As does Qatar and many other Arab nations, and other Asian nations.

People really do jump on the racism bandwagon a little too quickly.

Terramax - This morning when I was driving to work on the cornice. I was on the extreme left lane and we all know the speed limit is 80km there. suddenlly somebody from behind honking at me and flashing his headlights . I looked at the mirror and saw this indian guy driving a van and he wanted me to give way for him. mind you I am driving a 4X4. Didn't even let him go infact I even slowed down to 70km. See this their attitude. they see what the Qataris are doing and they wanted to better than Qatari drivers. They think they own the car , the road and they have the powers of Qataris. Stupid idixts. They don't know if I stop suddenly and he hit from the behind , he is going to be in serious trouble. plain stupid.

Regarding reckless driving, I brought one of my cars from this Brit. At the time of buying there were 4 speed violations on this car. Now we are driving it past 6 months without a single ticket.

Yes and I agree with Terramax when he says 'swing the discussion'

I said, 'excuse me i am being served at the moment'

the guy just went off about me being white and about thinking I had the right blah blah...

if people dont get the chip off their shoulder and stop blaming others... they will never learn and always be angry ignorant pathetic little people.

I try (and guess sometimes fail) to judge when someone is being an knob head with me because I am female (I get pissed off) or just because they are a rude knob head.

Also using mobile phone and driving... really pisses me off.

I think we have to remember this is a melting pot for many different cultures who are used to different driving situations.

Pedestrians have a right to the road just as vehicle drivers. There are just not enough crossings for them. If you take the Salwa and Al Waab Road no one thought about pedestrians there, as there are none on Salwa and the traffic lights on Al Waab are at least a km apart.

Use of lanes is really bad as no one really knows how to use them properly.

I have hardly seen anyone who knows how to use a roundabout properly especially coming off the roundabout crossing three lanes.

Speed will automatically reduce as there are more and more cars on the road now.

Traffic is not a case of 'if you can't beat them join them' because it is a case of life and death really, and the knowledge how to be a intellegent an safe driver on the roads.

Shreeya: I was unfortunate to live in Najma area for some time, and at least twice I saw kids playing with bicycle almost falling under the wheels of the cars in an unilluminated part next to the Regency restaurant. No injuries to kids, but causing serious car accidents.

T-coffee: Try reading your post. You guys drive the way you write - no rules. If you want me to answer, write in proper English (which means capitals, fully spelled words etc). I can't maintain a dialogue with someone who writes like a 10 years old kid.

Terramax,

People from all countries are residing in Najma area...there are Pionys, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Somalians, Egyptians and all others.,,why to blame it on only Indian drivers? The roads are so conjusted with the unique beautiful design of biiiiig roundabouts and smaaaaal circulating roads. Still I am yet to observe any big accident on these roads, believe me as I am a daily commuter on these roads.

You have to agree the fact that behind every accident there is a SUV, fortunately not driven by subcontinent drivers.

u r wrong drivers here adder to the rules n speed limit of Qatar

n talk of walking ... u wont see much from the subcontinent ppl Jay walking in the middle of the road... next time open your eyes n u will know who r jay walking

n talk of playing on the road Indian parents never allow their children to go out without supervision leave alone playing

your views r so distorted this is why we have labeled u racist.

n last of all if u r not from brazil plz do change your profile be proud of your country n not shamed of it

If you can't change your fate, change your attitude.

Shreeya: sure, that's my point as well - they behave same here - i.e. drive 40 without observing lanes, turning where they want to, without indicating, jaywalking in the middle of the road. So when someone (not only a SUV at 120) but a car driving at 60 to 80 comes, the accident is inevitable.

Just go to Najma in the end of the day to see the same. There are even kids playing in the middle of the street..

T_coffee: I agree there is a system. But this is YOUR system and it works THERE. The fact that a majority of the drivers on the road are from subcontinent, doesn't mean they can bring their "system" with them.

Lara123: There are enough Brazilian football players in Doha, but definitely much less than indian drivers.

Btw. I see no point in you guys attacking Brazilians (for your info, I am not a Brazilian). Pointing fingers will not change the fact that the majority of the drivers on the Doha roads are your compatriots, and the "industrial" (especially those who drive white TATA buses with workers) drivers shouldn't be given license even to walk.

Note one more thing in that 'Indian' video Terramax...just observe the speed of vehicles, not more than 30-40 I am afraid and not a single 4X4 drive.....Now imagine the same thing on Doha or Brazil roads with all SUVs with speed over 120...just imagine...you can even add drunk drivers from another video and watch the 'fun' with tea and biscuits...

Agree with you Terramax.

Shouldn't I migrate to Brazil now? I love the samba and footballers there.

I will personally make up flasks of tea (after Iftar!) and take biscuits to the traffic police so they will enforce the rules and don't need to go off and get a cuppa.

I am sure I am not the only person really hoping that these rules will be enforced to the max.

Terramax I totally agree.
