Expensive housing costs and school fees!

Hi!

I'm EXTREMELY keen to work in Qatar. However, I've got to be realistic about what I should and shouldn't accept in terms of a package. I've got a wife and tow kids aged 8 and 4. I neither want to pitch myself too high or low in terms of my package negotiations.

From what I've researched, packages vary greatly, so it's hard for me to gauge what I should shoot for.

I know that it's hard for anyone (apart from the employer) to give a definitive response, but I'd really like to hear about REALISTIC expectations that you would have if you were in my shoes right now. You, no doubt, have got a better idea than me as you have already been through this process. I guess the best people to respond would be Brits who have come from the same route as me, although I would appreciate any of your opinions.

Thanks in advance!

Billy.

I've never worked outside of the UK. The UK is great, but I'm in my mid-thirties and in the mood to try a new place. Qatar seems to be building everything from the ground-up, especially in the financial services sector, which is the industry I work in. It also seems to be a really family-friendly place. The UK is becoming less family-friendly by the year.

I think I may have a choice about living in either Qatar or Oman. I guess this is a silly question (seeing as this is QL), but what is better about Qatar when compared with Oman?

Thanks for the responses, Alexa and Grantley!

That is indeed a very well written reply to the person, it's been a long time since I've seen such a nice response...

Cheers on you buddy...

coming from the UK (I assume?), the cost of living and housing is relative. If you're a half-decent BA, expect around 20k plus allowances. I'd be surprised if they went to more than 12k for housing, so prepare yourself for a long and stressful drive each day. With 2 x kids you'll be wanting a villa, so expect to be on the fringes of town (which is quite do-able outside peak hours). Eat local and buy local and you will save some money, otherwise not possible at present. Good luck.
