Women welcome Grand Mufti’s Ruling on Forced Marriages

Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh, who heads the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars, has come out strongly against the practice of forcing women to marry against their will while calling for the imprisonment of violators, the Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.

The grand mufti’s call evoked positive reaction among women in the Kingdom, who greatly welcomed the move, saying it was a “wake-up” call. They also hoped that a mechanism would be set up to monitor and help those who come out against such practices.

“Forcing a woman to marry someone she does not want and preventing her from wedding someone she chooses ... is not permissible,” the grand mufti said. “Anyone who insists on forcing a woman ... to marry against her will is disobeying God and His Prophet (Muhammad),” he said.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz said anyone who does not give up this pre-Islamic practice “should be punished by imprisonment and should not be released until he drops his demand, which contravenes the provisions of Shariah.”

Violators should be kept behind bars until they commit to “refrain from aggressing the woman, her legal tutor and the man she marries, and until the chief of their tribe or another influential member of the tribe guarantees that they will comply with this and refrain from aggression,” he added.

I know Abu American.. He is absolutely amazing.  And his daughter is amazing too.

I'll ask around and see if I can find anyone who has a contact to grab that book for you.

If I may ask, are any good scholars located in Qatar. We have heard that a few scholars are in Qatar and really hope to learn from them. InshAllah Ameen.

I have so much to learn about islam before I really commit myself whole heartedly! And to be able to contact real live scholars and sit with them.. perhaps answering all my numerous questions (those which we are allowed to ask type of ?)  would be a dream come true.

As it stands.. I find the muslims (even students of  knowledge) seriously lacking in the ilm and even common sense department. (although they are better than the muslims who love rhetoric and interpret Quran with only a gullible heart) .

true..personally i think that men who beat up women are cowards, i would like to see them do that to another male..they should just lock them up and throw away the key...

nadt I absolutley agree with what you said. Most definately. And all of these problems are a great problem for women in Islamic societies. The problem is most definately a complex one that needs viewing from a wide range of angles at the same time.

Alhumdulilah Islam looks at everyone of those angles and defeats the shaytaan in his plan to deviate muslims from the truth that will set them free from this type of oppression

One thing I found as a women living with all the support and education of DV America has to offer is that still alot of women do not choose to stand up for themselves and make a change. Like you said.. this could be for many many reasons. And the lack of support and counseling even within America is the reason it still exists.

.

And this is what I mean by not standing up for themselves in that if more and more women put the foot down then it would be an encouragement to those who are too scared. Even if the consequences are severe and hard!

PH... i dont think that its a matter of women standing up for themselves, no one wants to be beaten, its more complex than that. Their are many reasons why women stay in abusive realtionships, reasons that they cannot get out, isolation, lack of support, some are threatened that te men will kill them, no one beleiving them because these abusers seem like great men in public, infact some of them have prominent positions in society, etc etc, i could go on....Their needs to be more awareness in all societies about DV and more support, because without support, women will continue to be victims.....

Mind you nadt... the women don't really stand up for themselves enough either.

If a man were to hit me.. then I'd show him the pavement really quick. having said that there is a lack of support for women in muslims country in terms of the law.

Check out Sheikh muqbils daughter,  Umm Abdullah Al Wade’iyyah . She is a sheikha in islam and she wrote a biography about life with her father. MashAllah.. He was such a good man to his children and an example to the muslims.

i found with our previos generations, there was a lot of confusion between Islam and culture, and your right being second generation muslims you can try and practice properly..

DV..if only we could solve that problem, unfortunately a lot of male muslims think they own the women...chauvinistic idiots..

That is whats great with being second generation muslim. Because we have so much information that our parents just didn't have. Alhumdulilah.

Even in the Uk I can see such a big difference in the pakistanis who come over and say .. they have been able to learn about Islam and practice more so then they could ever back home, in pakistan.

Now all we have to do nadt.. is get rid of all the domestic violence problems and we'll be sorted :)

ph..yes its a great step in the right direction, it always bothered me that these women are being sold off to a man their parents would rather marry, a lot of people mix culture with islam, and we all know they are two separate things....

nadt.. this will be great for muslim women all over the world. because the news will go as far as pakistan and the uk/us.. where the elders will have no excuse for their actions.. by calling it islamic.

p.s. or even worse.. sold off to some perv with no teeth.. cuz he smoked too much shisha

Thats great to hear, forced marriages are very cultural and not religous and its time they take action...a woman has a right to choose who she wants to marry and not be sold off to some perv who doesnt seem to mind that he may repulse her...
