Salaries in the IT Industry

Hi all,

I have 7 years of experience in the IT industry and am in the process of being offered a position with GBM (Gulf Business Machines.) Though I have yet to see the offer, I have some numbers. Would be grateful if someone can give some answers to my queries.

1) They are not providing accomodation. This is a real concern for me. I tried negotiating but was told that in most IT professional opportunities, you would not get accomodation. Can someone verify on this?

2) They are offering me QAR 26000 over 13 months, with free education for kids and health benefits. I have to take care of the accomodation myself and the transport as well. By the way, I have 2 kids, one of them who is attending school.

3) I was told that I might get a performance bonus at the end of the year, but it would not be explicitly mentioned in the contract. Is this normal practice? By the way, this is a perm position.

4) Can someone give me some information on GBM, other than those I found on their website? is it a good place to work etc....

The offer would be out in a week and I would appreciate if someone from the IT industry can give some useful pointers with regards to my queries.

Thanks everyone, for their inputs.

Kakashi28, yes, I am asian and we are a simple couple. No luxury living, hence I think we should not have a problem with the living standards, as long as it is not too bad...and we are really careful about our expenditure.

Fatcat..thanks for the information and the pointer on the 13th cheque, I will be careful about it.

by the way, I would be going in as a IT Consultant in GBM, not a senior position. Thanks again

I know GBM, they are quite a big company, with offices in almost all Gulf countries. Your offer although its all inclusive seems to be great, depending on the position you have got.

If it is just for a Rank and File or sr. staff post, and you are let's say Asian for that matter? Thats a good catch!

But if you are a westerner, i dont think you'll be satisfied with that. But all these are based on how you spend and live your life.

For Asian standards, that is a good catch (unless you wanted kick ass villas or flats on hotspot locations, and luxury living)

The salary seems appropriate, not wonderful but not bad either. I have seen some really good 2 bedroom flats for QR7.5k, nice and big ones, but with no furniture whatsoever, not even a/c. For QR8.5k you will find a good sized 2 bedroom flat, fully furnished (though not too great furniture). The minimum you'll pay for a car rental is QR1800 per month. Cost of living here is normal, some things are cheap, some things are not.

Watch out for the 13th cheque, they might not give you the full QR26k as a 13th cheque, they'll probably remove the allowances portion of it.

Hey man the offer is great.

I dont know how's gbm now, but when I was working at Ras Laffan back in 2003, I used to get some materials from GBM. Their offices are pretty cool, people were friendly back then (donno about now). I'm sure u will love it.
