Got those, it's summer in Doha, blues
Ok, I don't want anyone to think I don't like Qatar. For 8 months of the year (ok, maybe 8 and a half) I love living in Qatar. However, it's almost June and from now until the end of the September Qatar is the bane of my exisistence. I hate summer in Qatar, and unlike most lucky people I DON'T GET TO LEAVE!
Reasons I hate summer in Qatar:
1) 47 degrees in the shade is not a temperature meant to be experienced by normal human beings..in fact I'm fairly certain Satan keeps the fourth circle of hell a balmy 47 degrees!
2) I forget that the sky is actually meant to be blue and not yellow.
3) my Qatari I.D. melted to the dash board of my car. (I'm serious).
4) If my foot accidently touches the fire extingusiher in my car I get second degree burns.
5) I need to carry a winter jacket around in case I go in the mall.
6) I have constant pneumonia from going from one temperature extreme to the other. Look I know it's hot out, but you dont' need to combat that by putting the air conditioners at -47 degrees! 25 degrees would be lovely.
7) The swimming pool is too hot to swim in
8) Any fish you get from the ocean are already half cooked
9) It takes 45 minutes with the air conditioning on full blast to actually be able to breath in my car, and by then I look like I just took a bath with my clothes on (so sexy :P)
10) If you leave a bottle of water in your car, better leave a tea bag in it to...oh and blow on it a little before you drink it, you don't want to burn yourself.
UGH :(

April 30th:
Just got transferred to work and live in beautiful Dubai, UAE! WOW!!! Now this is a city that knows how to live!!!
Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. It's like New York City minus all the crocks, murderers, and drunks.
What a place! I watched the sunset from a deck chair on my beautiful bedroom veranda. It was beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.
May 13th:
Really heating up. Got to 95 degrees today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car, and everything is fully air-conditioned. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshiper.
May 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with tropical plants today around our lovely pool. Lots of palms and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me.
Another scorcher today, but I love it here. Heat is no problem at all.
June 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 95 all week even during the night.
How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least today it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.
July 15th:
Fell asleep by the pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 90% of my body. Missed 5 days of work.
What a dumb thing to do in this lovely city. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this..
July 20th:
Kitty (our cat) sneaked into the car when I left for the office. By the time I got to the hot car for my lunch break, Kitty had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $60,000 Audi. I told the kids that she ran away. The car now smells like Wisketts and cat shit. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.
July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant F***ing hair dryer in here!!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner died. The F***ing AC repairman charged 500 Dirhams just to drive over and tell me it was broken in Hindu English or some F***ing language that I couldn't understand.
July 30th:
The Air conditioner still broken .I've been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now because it is 7000 F***ing degrees inside.
Bloody 2,000,000 Dirhams house and we can't even go inside. Why did I ever come here? F*** the sun. F*** the wind. F*** the freakin' ocean. And locals walking around dressed in F***ing white tablecloths followed by little black female ninjas. F***ing crazy town.
August 4th:
It's 114 F***ing degrees today. Finally got the ol' air-conditioner fixed. It cost 2,000 F***king Dirhams and got the temperature down to 25, but the F***king Humidity makes the house feel 30 F***king Dubai degrees, stupid terrorist Repairman. I hate this stupid place.
August 8th:
If another local wise ass cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to F***ing whack him all the way back to his goddamn desert. F***ing Dubai; by the time I get to work with all that F***ing traffic and heat, the car's radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like a baked cat!!!
August 9th:
I tried to run some errands today, because it is F***ing Friday. Wore shorts and sat on the black leather seats in my Audi. The seat was so F***ing hot I thought my ass was on fire. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and my F***ing ass. Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and a baked cat.
August 10th:
The weather report might as well be a F***ing recording. Hot, humid and F***ing sunny. Hot, humid and F***ing sunny. Hot, humid and F***ing sunny. It's been too hot to do anything for 2 damn months and the weatherman dude wearing the F***king white tablecloth on TV says it might really warm up next week. Does it ever rain in this damn F***ing place? What is next? A F***ing hell freezing over wave?
August 14th:
WELCOME TO HELL!!! Temperature got to 120 today. Now the air-conditioner's gone in my F***ing Audi. The F***ing Audi serviceman said, 'Hot enough for you today?' F*** him and F*** Audi. My wife had to spend the 7,000 Dirham to bail my ass out of jail for assaulting that stupid F***ing bastard wiseass. F*** Dubai! What kind of a sick demented F***ing idiot would want to live in
this s**t hole?
August 15th: (Independence Day?)
F*** this place. I'm off back to New York
damn...thats TRUEEEE
Im the one and only
when all your friends are away and you're here working. I should have scheduled my vacation at this time...but it definitely screw up my kids' birthday plans...
i hate it when walking up to 15 meters is like a walk in hell. a hike is certainly a NO at this time. let alone waiting under a shed can burn you and cant breathe properly.

I thought licking an ice cream cone in hot weather was heavenly. Don't see much of that here.
The other day, had a whole bunch of pple stared at me and kids enjoying our Qr1 McDonalds ice cream cones, going down the City Centre travelator. Can't figure it out.
Maybe we need more ice-based desserts, like in south east asian countries (I missed the iced sugarcane drinks with lemon, ice kachangs, chendol, bobochacha, iced longan drinks, etc).
Forgiveness is life...:)
haha.... at least you have a car.. how about..... waiting for a cab for minimum of 30 mins because karwa call center inform you that the next available cab will be at 10 pm. once you get a cab..... you are stuck to the driver that stinks like they dont take a bath for a year.... you cant complain because you are late and thinking that the next cab would be worst.
pykester
Forgiveness is life...:)
but not the heat. Cant have it all. Stop cringing and get back to work. At least you all have AC cars, offices homes and what other luxuries. Spare a thought for the poor underpaid workers who toil in the sun to get you those roads and villas you live in. You do not hear them grumbling or moaning like little kids.
coz everyone's away....
keep off! All you snots and softies.
Summer heat rocks
Grrr Corne...
Too far to fly there to catch you!

Canadian winters can be a much bigger adjustment for people and it can last for 7 months:)
you'll get used to it.. Think about the poor immigrants having to put up with the Canadian winter..
when you're about to finish melting menthol candy in your mouth... drink water immediately ... expect the best effect then... you'll forgot summer...
~~~winner never quits~~~
I've only been here five weeks and I have to say after being in Canadian spring (maximum 15 degrees during the day time) and then coming into this heat, I find it absolutely oppressive and I don't know if it's just me, but it also makes me sort of dizzy. Trying to drink water but haven't been able to eat since I came here.I can barely manage juice and toast most days. I don't know what's worse, getting used to the driving or getting used to the heat:)
I agree! it is very hot now! i dont know how i will survive the summer :)
Ah Jeez, is it that obvious :P
Judging by your postings today, you are already feeling the heat..:o)
"the words froze as it came out of our mouths....AND WE HAD TO FRY THEM TO SEE WHAT WE WERE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT!"
You were lucky the words didn't shatter before you could fry them.
Britexpat--We used to make "sun tea" all the time during the summer when I was a kid. Put a few fresh mint leaves in while it "brews" then mix a little sugar before it chills in the fridge and you have an excellent drink.
Gypsy me and hubby will go back to Canada for the whole june and half. need to get away from Doha summer heat for awhile and cool off in Canadian summer.
I DO WHAT I LIKE, I LIKE WHAT I DO
I had a first hard year as well, but then I got used to being one of the few working-through-the-summer ppl here and started to see the good sides - no shopping queues, no traffic jams, free seats in the bars...
Get yourself a temporary pool membership at the Sheraton and find a friend with a boat - swimming in the sea around sunset is gorgeous!
Yes, I can actually feel my stress levels going down with the sun.
Although my husband thinks I should be tougher as bearing the heat is supposed to be in my genes.
Naaaaaah!
Actually I hear that is true. It is the best way to make ice tea.
Visit www.qatarhappening.com
The tea bag one reminded me of a friend who used to take a water dispenser bottle of water, put some tea bags in it and leave it in the sun for a few hours. He used to chill itand said it was the best way to make iced tea. ...why not try it?
LOL! I feel so much better that someone who's been born and raised in this hates it as much as I do!
Actually I'm typing this from the garden. It's quite pleasant this evening. Early mornings and evenings are best for being outdoors. The rest of the time I stay indoors or go from air-conditioned building to air-conditioned car to air-conditioned building.
Once me and a couple of my homies were in Canada....up north....really up up north...near the north pole...and it was so cold....C-O-L-D..man...BRRRRRRRRRRRR...so cold....that...that...the words froze as it came out of our mouths....AND WE HAD TO FRY THEM TO SEE WHAT WE WERE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT!
LOL ok! So it's not just me! you're lucky your pool is temperature controlled. I live in my house after mid-June. Although I have to laugh at myself because I'm dreading going home to Canada this November soooo cold. :P
God, no, I get really short-tempered when the mercury goes into the 40s. I tend to live in my pool :/ Or try to exist in an air-conditioned bubble.
What I meant was Kodak will get over being enthusiastic about the summer months like s/he said s/he is now :)
DG, I'm Canadian, I melt. :P Seriously people I'm not insulting Qatar, I love Qatar...for 8 and a half months of the year, for the next 3 I'll be miserable...then again I'd be miserable in Canada and the highest it gets there is 32. I just hate heat.
But DG, come on, you get used to it, but to you ever LIKE it???
Happily! I'd love to go home right now, spend the summer in Canada and then come back in September. Who wants to pay for me to do that?
Personally, i love the feeling that i get when i text my friends back home every day with the phrase "its another sunny day"
They always reply....and let me know what they think in no uncertain terms.... :P
notice it. That's why the pay here is "bigger". Just be content of the situation. At least, no cyclones, only sandstorms. No earthquake, only "putok" hehhehehehe. Joke, no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gosh, i wonder what would the temp like when i reach there in July....:(
We bought this fan thing for the top of our water tank and it makes a HUGE difference. It's our second summer with it and it works great. It draws the heat out of the tank. Got tired of having to draw the kids bath 1 hour before bath time!
my 2nd summer here.. and with the kinda work i do i am sure it doesnt look all that great lol.. my car ac wont switch off when i am at site.. lol..
look at the bright side of summer....
1) you save electiricty by not turning the heater on...
2) sweating is a detoxation of the body, and it also helps you shed some weight, so by the time summer ends, we will all be vogue cover models....
3) you get to play the great game of spot that smell, with the malls and the office environment being invaded by the fresh scent of arm pits, a$$ and feet...
4) the romans were applauded for their sona technology, in qatar its available everywhere and for free....take that 1000 dollars per day spas...
5) you can sit in the car, turn the ac on just right, and get to watch the gulfs favorite pass time...watch the poor worker suffer a heat stroke
6) and finally everyone in management is on vacation so its time to PAARTYYYY :D
If you leave your nice country and came here to settled ur life...then you have to adjust with the weather also...otherwise we can stay in our own cool boxes..
hahahahah
but it's the freakin' humidity that causes all the damage. I mean the whole country turns into one big sauna
why not, boxer shorts will go cold just the same :) x
Water is heated to above boiling degree, evaporated and the condensed ... flows into water pipes to reach your home .. loses part of the heat on the way... ofcourse in summer heat it does not loose much of its heat
On the other hand ... the freezer idea looks cool, I wonder if it would work with males ...
I always turn off the hot water, but the water is still by no means cold. It's just not as hot.
Visit www.qatarhappening.com
Do we get carbon credits for keeping our geysers off in summer.
Hi All. Turn off you geysers in Summer, that way you'll have cold water anytime you need, and naturaly, the cold water tap will supply the heat.
.. when i frist use the tap, i thought that the heater in on, so i checked it, then its still hot!!! waited for some time, it got more hot!! stood there for a min thinking how the Hel* this could be happening, till now i'm convinced that heater in on.
if ya manage to fry them eggs outside let me know........lol
will be my 5th summer here and have learnt a trick or two, have a pail in each bathroom and after each shower fill it up with water for yr next shower so ya can have nice cool water instead of the hot water that comes outta the tap/shower , also this avoids burns especially at you know where..lol
do the same for the kitchen for when ya gonna wash veg else ya gonna get cooked veg for ya salad.
life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......
outside can really fry eggs???
To drive you have to touch the very cold stearing wheel
well let me know what you decide, betya those cotton ones win though ;) xx
It's the worst feeling when u get into ur car after it's baked in the sun for hours, and by the time the a/c starts working properly, u've already reached ur destination! Grrr...
Oh and who's forgotten their sunglasses in the car and tried wearing them ? They burn! Or how about putting on the seat belt ?! I try as much as possible to avoid going out during the day.
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong -Garfield
Silk... feels nice doesn't it?
but cotton....mmmmmmmmm
ok I will carry out an experiment! LOL
silk n nylon are really not good for summer.. i'd say cotton's the best. even i wanna try it out all though its not that hot in Bangalore.. what the hell...the cooler the better!!
It's about time the government did something for expats.
Therefore, my proposal is that private and public companies be instructed by Emiri decree to allow all expats to take the months June to September off, which is not included as part of their annual vacation.
Those that wish to travel are to be given a government grant to travel business class, with additional spending money provided.
