Thank God for Qatar

Tigasin321
By Tigasin321

I have just passed my two year anniversary for living in Qatar. During these past two years I have made many friends from different parts of the world, learned about Arabic culture and especially Qatari culture. I have learned also about Islam (something I was clueless about before I came here) and have met many, many fine and honorable Qataris that I have done business with and have become friends with.

I also have an interesting job and get well paid for it. I am treated with respect and generosity by my Qatari sponsor and have had the privelege of meeting senior members of the Royal family and the government. Frankly, I am impressed at the excellent job they are doing here in managing a rapidly changing economy and social scene and accommodating the requirements of ex pats from more than 100 countries while at the same time preserving their own cultural values.

My own country is steeped in economic gloom, Europe and Asia are quickly following the United States into recession and many of my friends are facing unemployment. I for one, will not be complaining too much about being in Qatar. Again, I say, thank God for Qatar.

I wish i could say the same , i have also just completed my 2 years of service to this Nice place but unfortunately things have from bad to worse for me and my family in this last year to the point where if i dont leave i will not only lose my family but also my sanity, we where promised all these things before leaving australia and back then in 2006 i said to my wife are you sure that we will get them because and they sound to good to be true and its such a long way to just pack up and leave, anyway upon arriving i was immediately told what i was actually receiving which was less than what i was originally been promised (i should have got it in writing prior to leaving)and then 3months down the the track i was terminated and then force to work with somebody else who did not really want me anyway, then finally when we regrouped again help start a new company , one of our ex employees f@#ks us all over well and truly again feelings of of uncertainty came thick and fast , we then went back to aussie for a short holiday which was not that enjoyable due to the fact that we only received a small amount of monies that where owed to us and then to make matters worse , upon our return from our holiday the company was about to get taken away from us with the help of that ex employee so the spiral continued so far that this year alone i have not even received my full salary for any particular month all i have received are bits and pieces

iam now owed 5 full months of salaries to date and to make things worse i have only just received my id car and license after 2 years , so my experience of Qatar has been absolutely shithouse one , and ive been told by my boss that from now things will get better ,like the check in the mail and pigs can fly , well as far as im concerned if im going to suffer i would like to do it in a nicer place Called Australia

I will keep my comment very civilized for this time only.

I Thank you Jesus for letting me work in the State of Qatar, for meeting and knowing only few true friends from all walks of life and nationalities.

I do pray FOR those that are having a tough time acclimatising to this kind of environment, that they finally find their path and those that are having a hard time coping with the bureaucracy, hardships of the job, daily routine, and cost of living are able to find better green pasture, my best wishes and luck to all.

I Thank you Jesus for the driving style and culture shock from the State of Qatar.

I Thank you Jesus for allowing me to consume once in a while distilled Spirits in a Islamic country.

I Thank you Jesus for letting me work for an American Company and not a local one.

I Thank you Jesus for Qatar living, the mullahs, the good and bad and the ugly...

So where is the party?

"It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

Professor Schama argues that one of the key elements that sustains American optimism is American religious faith.

He says that it is the belief in religious freedom - and in the right of people to choose their own faith, not have it imposed on them from birth - that underlies the American belief in self-improvement and change.

And he says it is "remarkable" that in the US presidential election, it appears that the Democratic candidate Barack Obama is more shaped by his faith, than his Republican rival, John McCain. It would usually be the other way round.

He says that although Americans have a belief in their country as a "city on a hill" - a shining example to others - they are not complacent about the economic and foreign policy issues facing the US.

There is a recognition, he believes, of the real challenges posed by the rise of China as an economic power, and he believes that there will be more conflict over investment in China than immigration from Mexico.

Americans are by no means as militaristic as the rest of the world seems to believe, he says, with the debate about how big the military should be going right back to the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.

But Professor Schama believes that one of America's great strengths is its ability to re-invent itself at the time of crisis.

And at the moment America's self-image is being remade.

Tig, It is nice to see what you wrote. Quite a change from the usual moaning & groaning. I came 17 years ago here on a holiday and never left. Have adopted Qatar as my country and never regretted it. Yes ofcourse there are things one misses, and ofcourse things are done differently here, but when you take the whole picture you will see that we are pretty lucky. We should be happy to live in a country where most things are available, where most of us make a good living, have good accomodation and, on top of it, it is much safer than most other countries. And when one gets to know the Qataries, you will notice that they are friendly, courteous and hospitable.

Also Gypsy, it wasn't just Labda and JaneyJaney that I invited, I also invited a third ringer (she is the Brazilian/Uruguyan girl) and she can also handle a drink although where these girls put it is beyond me.

Go easy on the French sons (they are young and impressionable). As for the German ringer, he is the same size as me so I doubt he will be able to put up much of a fight in any drinking contest.

So, in short, we will just concede gracefully and acknowledge your superiority. Where the hell is Mr Paul when you need him?

Of course we're going to out drink them, look at who's coming!

Tig: He's American so he can't drink REAL beer

Gumby: Last party I went to with him he stuck to Bacardi Breezers and was typsy off 3

Vegas: It's not vodka so he's lost

Tig's French sons: There French, this isn't wine and they both weigh 90 pounds soaking wet, we've soooo got them.

FatCat's & Alexa's Hubbies: No worries there cause their wives will be keeping a close eye on how much they drink ;)

The only one we have to worry about is the German wildcard who's coming....Hmmmm, granted though he's the same size as Tig's French sons, so he might be a lightweight.

Firstly: EXCELLENT choice Tig on your two extra tickets, I couldn't have chosen better myself.

Secondly: Labda, I can't wait to go head to head in the drinking with you! :D

What a breath of fresh air! Thanks for that Tig! I've been in Qatar for 3 years and I shall say it once more, it's not that bad! I am actually enjoying my stay here! Met lots of good people, learned a lot about how it is in this part of the continent and well, there's a lot of things to look forward to everyday! Even if my parents decide to leave at some point, I reckon I'll stay. ;)

"I have learned also about Islam (something I was clueless about before I came here)"

agree on this Tig,... i have lots of misconceptions about Islam prior to coming here which were enlightened now and because of this i feel if only people will be open to learning about other culture and religion, the world will be PEACEFUL to live in...
