Qataris on Strike!
what started as an email by an outraged Qatari (women) employee in a government corporation, have soon turned into a call for strike on Sunday,8:30Am as an outcome of salary deduction on Qataris as part of the new unified HR law. The call have soon been circulated to Qatari employees of the government corporation(unofficially). In addition to facebook & Qatari forums. The caller of the strike written that she have prepared the sign boards & invited the local media!
Does anyone know what has happened with the salary deduction for Qataris as part of the new unified HR law? Or anything at all about the new HR law?

I guess the Constitution overrides the Labour Law but it seems strange to have two conflicting documents.
I wasn't surprised that the papers didn't have the story either. (It would have been more interesting that the Move to Ban Illegal Decoders rubbish they publish normally). However for the Qataris to take such action, (I wouldn't have called it an organised strike) in a society where such protests are rate shows the depth of feeling about the issue and the poor way it was handled.
I don't know about the labour law, but the existing constitution forbids striking. That's what the lukwia officers convey to protesters.I wasn't surprised that none of the local media covered the story. As according to a local blog, journalists were prevented yesterday to take pictures or conduct interviews with protesters.
this topic is about locals.if you're interested to discuss the plight of expats, you can start a new topic.
I don't think the constitution stands for much though, since I was led to believe that it also forbids discrimination based on race.
was a BOWLING thread :(

is the incident reported in today's Arabic dailies. Nothing in the GT, QT and TP.

so if you don't get paid, you're told to work extra hours without more pay, get your salary reduced, you're treated badly by your boss and your working conditions are appalling you still can't strike. Even if you resign after such bad treatment you still need an exit permit from your sponsor....and they can deny that.
However Qataris that work in what are considered key industries, i.e. oil and gas are not allowed to go on strike but they can form a union to air their grievances. (Saying I have not been promoted this year is not considered a valid grievance for most.....)
exiled - does article 120 only apply to Qataris?
Article 120 of the labour law states that
'The workers may go on strike if amicable settlement of the dispute between them and the employer becomes impossible'
however there are 5 conditions that have to be met one of which is giving the employer two weeks notice and seeking approval of the ministry.
Well that is what is says in the English version in Arabic it may be different....
.....
Apologies. I was going on exiled's statement that "Qataris can form unions and can strike under the law."
He sounded quite certain about it!
not even Qataris were allowed to strike(it was more or less a protest). All qatari employees at that particular government corporation had a deduction between 5000-14000QR.
vinodnair - regardless of how much you earn to start with, anyone would be a bit p*ssed off if their salary was suddenly reduced.
the-birdie - as exciled-saint explained, non-Qataris aren't allowed to strike, so I guess the double standards already exist.
wow Qataris are changes!!!
Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
in handling the striks by Qataris,,and those poor Nepali laborers who earns QR.800 ( in paper ) but always denied salaries for 2-3 months !!!!
HOw much an engineer working in govt. gets then?
because the govt decided to bring the salries to normal
where in the word a govt employ as a simple clerk gets 10000 us$ /month

Lol, great idea Xena...we could definitely use some pointers on effective strike tactics from some old hands. I was also thinking of the French, who appear to be on strike every other day.

they'll show them how its done;-)

how dare they strike - deport them back to their own countries - ohh they qataris ;)
As mentioned in other post - they were outside karwa/electricity/water place red police and regualr police were drivng around the block they seem to disperse after a while - seemed quite short.
IF IT IS A HUNGER STRIKE...WE SHOULD AVOID EATING /DRINKING TEA & BURGERS IN PUBLIC .......

There were around 70men/20 women. It lasted for about an hour
Let the change start with Locals first...
I agree with those guys who says that there are some Qatari fellows who really work harder than like others but sadly very very less in Quantity. These guys are very much nice, cooperative & result oriented. Inshort, VERY PROFESSIONAL QATARIS. GOD BLESS THEM.
.
Qatari Govt. must do alot in this regard by enforcing Qataris to be punctual,Hard Workers & result oriented. The Qataris (Male or Female) incentives & benefits they get in Qatar is way too much to make them ignorant & behave in unprofessional way.

LoL genesis
Because they have YOU, to do all the work for them ;)
Hmm wonder why the Qataris in my company are still sitting in their offices, drinking coffee, chatting over the phone, smoking, reading news paper, surfing the net. Why dont they just hit the streets like everyone else!

Motherhood...The hardest job you'll ever love! : )
it's happening...right now
I presume a union still exists.
There was certainly one in the early 80's within the oil sector. Membership was restricted to Qatari nationals.
I remember the Floormen and Derrikmen striking in 1982 and actually being flown off one of the two rigs (either 103 or Dana). I don't recollect any action being taken against the strikers.
Yes, Flatulence, my working day starts around 6.45am when I check the Asian markets, and that's after swimming laps for 30 mins and getting three small children up, dressed and breakfasted. (and, no, I don't have a nanny for my children)
;)
-------------------------------------
IN OUR DEPARTMENT LOT OF QATARIS WORKING AND VERY MINUTE OF THEM COMING LATELY AND GOING EARLY. MOST OF THEM ARE HARD WORKING THAN OTHER NATIONALS. MOST OF THEM ARE WESTERN EDUCATED AND THEY ARE HARD WORKERS.
i think the freedom of choice among qatari nationals are beginning to show up...it's about time...

I agree with britexpat, there are many qataris who are very hard working and much more so than expats. I know quite a few in my organization who are so.

Some Qataris at my place work just as hard as any expat. My boss spends much longer hours at work than me.
Lol flanostu, that made me remember when i was at Morocco to get married, the King's representative was supposed to get in at 9 am and leave at 12h, but he would arrive at 11h and still leave at 12h.

strike is illegal here, but when you see some locals with their work habits- comes in late and leaves early, and in between that, nothing much is accomplished. That's almost the same as going on strike. :)
a qatari at work at 8:30am???? this should be posted in the funnies.
Funny though. You won't see stike in this conservative country often. Strike entrails democracy. Probably it's just over the horizon.
If those are Karwa drivers striking for better housing and employee treatment, they will all be nabbed and thrown to jail..
ha ha thats funny....late april fool joke....
will get their money back to subside the issue.

i'd say stupid, knowing that she's a graduate. And holds a good position. In her call to the radio show, she claimed that 10,000QR was deducted from her salary
i doubt it will take place. I don't know how serious she is & will others join her?(although a lot have vowed to, in public forums).I can't believe how brave she is.She have been complaining over the local media for the past few days & now this
Brave, or stupid? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

they do have a Union?

I thought it was illegal to strike in Qatar. In which case they'll all be immediately arrested.
