Photographs of alleged prisoner abuse which Barack Obama is attempting to censor include images of apparent rape and sexual abuse, it has emerged.

At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Among the graphic statements, which were later released under US freedom of information laws, is that of Kasim Mehaddi Hilas in which he says: “I saw [name of a translator] ******* a kid, his age would be about 15 to 18 years. The kid was hurting very bad and they covered all the doors with sheets. Then when I heard screaming I climbed the door because on top it wasn’t covered and I saw [name] who was wearing the military uniform, putting his **** in the little kid’s ***…. and the female soldier was taking pictures.”

The translator was an American Egyptian who is now the subject of a civil court case in the US.

Three detainees, including the alleged victim, refer to the use of a phosphorescent tube in the sexual abuse and another to the use of wire, while the victim also refers to part of a policeman’s “stick” all of which were apparently photographed.

I seen how it worked for the media in 2004 back in Saudi,

Every Arab wanted to kill the American for being a baby killer..

If you looked American you became the target also.

The media can use it well to turn the truth around to their advantage

PM - no, I didn't think the two were linked either. I thought you were implying they were. Crossed wires!

It is a sad fact of life. There has always been war crimes and there always will be.

This is not right of course, but it can explain in some ways the equalness of it all.

Do exist and they are used to bring these soldiers to trial then that is fair.

If they are just going to be published to heap more hatred on the Americans; that is wrong.

Obama is doing the right thing IMHO, he is new, this did not happen under his leadership it was Dubya and his morons.

IF this did happen, then yes of course of course they should be shown in a court of law; if the video was obtained legally.

That is the crux of the matter to me; was it obtained legally? If it was not, they cannot be presented anyway and it all becomes a mute point.

I see. I didn't realise the decision not to release the photos would mean there would be no-one brought to justice.

But surely the soldiers in question can still be brought to trial, with the photos as evidence, without the photos having to be released into the public domain?

By tallg• 29 May 2009 19:31

I agree that they should be tried and punished, but the concern is that if the photos are made public then US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq will be targeted as a result, when they personally didn't have anything to do with the torture. Though you could argue that they're all part of the same army so retribution is fair.

Did you read my comment JackFrost? I'm not talking about what the terrorists said. This refers to an Major General. I'll re-post the relevant bit again for you;

"Allegations of rape and abuse were included in [Major General Antonio Taguba's] 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph."

Why have you fixated onto the what the terrorists said? Read the whole article then form an opinion based on all the information contained therein.

Would you believe a terrorist,, they are just sending up smoke to divert the real reason they are there, terrorist...

jackfrost - read the article if you want to know where the information came from;

Detail of the content emerged from Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq.

Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

The graphic nature of some of the images may explain the US President’s attempts to block the release of an estimated 2,000 photographs from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan despite an earlier promise to allow them to be published.

Now you can choose to believe that or not, but attacking hapy over it is pointless.

The fact that Obama has done a u-turn on releasing the photos, for fear of the repercussions for troops, suggests they're pretty horrific.

if criminals were treated with respect and like a VIP in prison they won't mind getting in there for no reason.

I don't think the media can falsify or publicly print sworn statements that are not accurate. I also believe that President Obama is trying to mitigate damage, damage which has already been done and the people responsible have already paid the price for. I do not think people should forget what happened there, but there is no need to bring it up in the media again, I don't believe it would do anyone any good.

Jackfrost, Would you believe a terrorist ?

what do you mean? How do you prove that one in jails were terrorist? Does Iraq had WMD?
