Flogging of a Sudanese girl
A video appeared on youtube yesterday of a Sudanese girl being flogged at a police station in Khartoum this week
have sparked a wave of condemnation by the Sudanese on the Internet as many debated that what happened exceeds the legal punishment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJJizh3Z_xo
Earlier Today , Arab news channels picked up the story which lead to the Khartoum police issuing a press release declaring that the girl appeared in video was sentenced to be flogged for committing indecency a few months ago!And exposing this video is a plot to destroy the Sudanese government image in the international media
This is not the first time a Sudanese girl being sentenced by flogging. Last year A Sudanese Christian teenager has been lashed 50 times for wearing what a judge considered an "indecent" knee-length skirt
Do not judge any religion with acts of some bad followers who are using the name of religion to fullfill their goals.
Every person thinking makes a difference.
I really have enjoyed what Lubna (A Sudanese Journalist) has done to the Sudanese gov and how she managed to fled the country under their nose.
When it comes to Sharia Laws, many gov are very selective, Sharia isn't just about the penal code.
its blocked now :(
hishamalshareef, "No islamic, tradional practises in Sudan accepts this,it is an act of an isolated group of people, who happened to be governers overnight,Islam has nothing to do with this and the behaviours, nature and culture of the sudanese people strongly condemn this."
Interesting comment. Please share more, esp if you are Sudanese as you say.
I know Oryx though and would like to hear more. So, did the Sudani Minister of Humanitarian Affairs confirm your observations?
Disgusting and pointless. When will people realized that capital punishment achieves nothing other than making all of us so called "innocents" barbarians.
Now let me see who can watch it. After all, these are all secrets, which we do not want others to see (because the content contains "Prohibited Materials"

Sudan's judiciary opened an investigation into a video of a woman being flogged that has been widely circulated on the Internet, the state news agency reported Sunday.
The video shows a woman in a voluminous cloak on her knees screaming and pleading with blue-uniformed policemen, identified as Sudanese, who take turns whipping her across the head and feet.
There is no way to verify the identity of the woman or the location of the event shown on the two minute video!
"The investigation was started immediately after the images of the young woman, being punished under Articles 154 and 155 of the 1991 Sudanese penal code, appeared on the Internet," the judiciary said in a statement.
The statement said the investigation would look into whether the punishment was implemented improperly
In 2009, Sudanese journalist Lubna Hussein was sentenced to 40 lashes under the country's controversial indecency law for appearing in public wearing trousers.
Under a storm of international criticism for the sentence, Hussein was eventually released with just a fine.
Whip the policemen!
There are times when I think I should really be grateful for whatever I have got....to be born where I was born!
I feel lucky to be what I am!
you sure are politically correct.
If you notice, muslims are condemning this and saying it is not in accordance with their religion. Your point is pointless, mate.
Thanks for posting and opening our eyes. I will pray for that woman.
You don't go to Guantanamo for wearing a skirt (unless it had a bomb sown into it)
I, personally, am against corporal punishment.
However, if Muslim countries want to apply their religious Law, so be it. It is their right to do so as it your rights to air your opinions.
Whether the flogging is inhumane, barbaric or not, it is not man-made laws despite Man can tamper with evidence to be able to mete out such punishment. Muslims did not make this Law. I am sure many of the Muslims would have loved not to have any kind of punishments at all. Anyway, who likes to be punished? By the way(not related to this topic), was the treatment of Guantanamo prisoners humane? Was the treatment of Iraqi prisoners, during the US invasion humane? Was the raping an dkilling of Iraqis humane? Was the treatment of Gaza civilians humane? Is the treatment of Palestinians people humane as we speak?
Many of us like being in Qatar, but if one of us breaks the Law,say by killing ones employer, and faces the punishment of the Qatari Law, one will start criticising the Qatari Law as barbaric and others will join in a flick of the eye.
My point is: It is so easy to criticise while being an onlooker. Thats human nature.
Besides, public punishment has proven to be an effective way of deterring offences. Onlookers would hate to be in the place of the one being punished. Therefore, it deters their desires to commit offences that affect the society in general. That is called risk management.
The thing I have observed is: When Muslims are punished, there is hardly any mention of it. It is okay and acceptable. BUT when Muslims punish in accordance to their Religious Laws, there is a lot of noise and brouhaha. Double Standards spring to mind.
Finally, in a week time or less, how many people here would remember this sad story? How many people, in Sudan, would still remember not to get involved in any indecent activities. I am sure the latter number would be larger than the former number.
cryspy yes, but that was then...this is now. Times have changed...or so one would hope.
an easy scapegoat to use religion like the age of 11th to 13th century when majority of criminals were recruited for holy wars.
Why don't you email the Sudani authorities with that comment oh and why you are at it let some folk know in Pakistan and a few of the lads in Somalia and you matter as well let some of the Yemenis know while you are at it and some Saudis, oh and don't forget the Iranians ......ooopps getting a bit long there!
Cryspy, I know. But I am a bit weary of people saying "Islam has nothing to do with it" when all those Muslims comitting atrocities claim to do it in the name of Islam.
nom
Mr. Bush claimed that he's guided by God, so do U really believe on that??? of course not,
similarly if someone want to justify his brutality and stupidity with Sharia laws, it doesn't mean that he's really following it.
I had the experience of having tea with the Sudani Minister of Humanitarian Affairs earlier this year.
He took the touble to enlighten me about my opinion vis a vis Sudan and human rights and the western media.
mmmmmmmmm
Sudanese deserve a LOT better government than they have. I have been twice and know quite a few Sudanis. Very nice people.
Amjadfahad21, then maybe you want to suggest to those meting out punishment like this in the name of Islam to read Qur'aan.
See, us doing it will make no difference at all.
Islam has laid the laws the to prevent the modesty of the woman and no where in the Quran is mentioned that woman is less than man. I suggest to my dear ones to read the Quran with meaning to understand Islam.
Please read haidths to understand the status of woman is Islam.
If there is any queries i will be very much happy to assist.
******** No Comment.
in short it gives a very clear picture about where this country is heading.. (back to the dark ages)
Very sad to hear about this.
This is so wrong on so many levels. Flog a convicted rapist/peadophile/murderer. If they have been convicted and it is proven and they are without doubt guilty; do what you want, they are the lowest of the low.
However, reading about this woman, she did nothing wrong.
This is too cruel punishing a women in the street in front of the public .
Seems - There is no law in the country ????
flogging is barbaric and should be abolished, legal or otherwise as the pain inflicted is the same. some days back i was listening to the news on how malaysian prisoners were flogged in the jails even for petty crimes..i googled and saw the video which was so disturbing that the scene kept haunting me for some days..
if you are weak hearted please dont try to see the malaysian flogging videos.
barbaric
btw, genesis how many videos and linked do U receive on twitter, facebook and on other social network sites, and for how many of them, do U really bother to share with us???
as the saying goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely. nobody to check on the police so they just mete out their brand of punishment with impunity..
Very well put..
the main issue here is the abuse of the power given to those who are the guardians of the law..
What exactly was her crime? The article says "committing indecency" which could mean a lot of things. From what I know the Sudanese law is not purely based on the shari'a alone so horrible as it is it seems to be the law of their land. Hope and pray to see amendments in their legal system soon..This is just sad!
According to Sharia law, flogging to be performed with a book under one arm to limit the swing, are not supposed to leave permanent scars, and when the number of lashes are high, are frequently done in batches to minimize risk of harm.
This still doesn't justifies applying Sharia law in the first place, if really her felony was dressing indecently!!!
rdsouza, women is considered lesser than a man in all of the GCC too.
A sick society , sick legal system and a sick population that considers a woman lesser than a man etc...cancer to mankind.
happens in saudi every week... no one seems to mind it though.
this is pandering to the awful side of human nature!
Giving these sadistic individuals a chance to hurt another person anyway they want is a licence to the worst in human nature. These guys were licensed to hurt another human being in any way they chose, choosing where they inflicted their whipping, face, upper body etc. This seems far from the Quranic injunction that such punishment can only be administered with the Quran held under the upper arm,!! Why did France introduce the Guilletine? Why did Britain introduce scientific hanging? To prevent perverted individuals like this inflicting punishment for pleasure. We can all disapprove antisocial behavior including sexual immorality as a destroyer of social equilibrium but we have in the civilised world a duty surely have moved beyond this!
Thats horrible!!
All this because she wear a skirt
Seriously some countries still live in middle centuries..
How i wish to wip that guy ..
"many debated that what happened exceeds the legal punishment"
So what is the debate.. was the sentence wrong or the way it was carried out ?
What can you expect from animals?
can you please shed more light on the plight of this women as very little has been reported over the media. And there are conflicting stories over Arab internet forums.
I apologize for sharing this video here. But since i received it by twitter this afternoon, i was haunted by its brutality.
Iam sudanese and feel ashame of my legal system to apply such a horrific punishment on a poor girl, this is injustice by all means,
No islamic, tradional practises in Sudan accepts this,it is an act of an isolated group of people, who happened to be governers overnight,Islam has nothing to do with this and the behaviours, nature and culture of the sudanese people strongly condemn this.
Barbaric, sickening and shameful...
This is not the way to mete out punishment - especially to a woman.
As always, prey upon the weak and defenceless....shameless !@#$%^
sick legal system...its really really very sad...
Why emphasize the girls nationality when she was flogged in her own country?
very sad & humiliating.
In no way can this be considered legal punishment.
I just wish that all international news agencies picks up the story to at least give justice to this poor women
simply pathetic.
i saw this video its like animal treatment
very very bad
