Test for Al Jazeera

The escalating protests in Bahrain will prove to be a real test for Al Jazeera's independence. In Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Bahrain its coverage has sustained and invigorated the protests. Now that Qatar's government has come out against the protesters in Bahrain, how will Al Jazeera handle it? The next few days will be a real test for credibility of the network.

The Doha, Qatar-based Al Jazeera news network has been credited with helping to sustain protest movements across the region with its wall-to-wall coverage, but will its editorial line change now that Qatar has voiced support for Saudi intervention in Bahrain?

Each TV station is selective. That's how they create their image. You have to see them all, then analyze what you saw, and then you can come up with a statistical "truth" with an error margin of 5 to 10%.

I find al Jazeera to be more credible than CNN and most US media. BBC is still the best in my opinion.

I have to admit that France 24 Arabic is excellent as well.

You guys are judging Al-jazeera English. Al-Jazeera Arabic has taken over the Arab world by a storm,...Al-Arabiya lost its credibility long time ago

Some of their programs are excellent, and I don't think the English channel is any more anti-American/critical of the West than the BBC, but I agree with WK that they have a huge whole when in comes to critical reporting in this region. It's a bit like reading the Gulf Times: lots of critical coverage of the rest of the world (lifted from the wire) but in pages of 'all is well in Doha'. Although in Al Jazeera's case they just ignore it.

These past couple of months have been an opportunity to gain world credibility. If they blow it, I don't think they'll get another chance.

I find some of their programs are excellent. The idea is to look at the different channels and draw your own conclusions.

Would you take everything NDTV or Fox says as gospel ? I hope not..

Similarly, Al-Arabiya was brought in as a counterwieght to Al-Jazeera. they have a naturaly western bias to their news.

Al Jazeera equates to Bin Laden in our parts, maybe they can get rid of that negative publicity by some quality reporting.

I haven't seen anything from them highlighting any problem in Qatar so for me, they are rubbish.

It is very easy to showcase some other country's problems but when will Al Jazeera develop a spine and show the world Qatar's problems?

By britexpat• 15 Mar 2011 23:11

This is because it has been given undue negative publicity by the mainstream media.

Brit it is not recognised in Indian sub-continent either.

Al-Jazeera still does not get the recognition it deserves. One key reason is that it is not widely syndicated in north america.

Al Jazeera has no credibility. The day they cover the problems of Qatar, they can earn credibility. Till then, they are just opportunistic a&&holes....

These past couple of months have been for Al Jazeera what the Gulf War was for CNN in 1989-91. Massive global exposure largely because its young reporters were on the ground and ready to take serious risks. Its English network's viewership has skyrocketed around the globe, and even USA networks are forced to rely on it, thereby giving further credibility to a network many Americans once derided.

It will be interesting to see you Al Jazeera handles Bahrain from now on.
