Arabic words for the day

dpatrick
By dpatrick

If we learn just one or two Arabic words per day, imagine how many we would have in our vocabulary after only a year. So for today:

mushmis -- sunny
ghaa'im -- cloudy

I've taken these from an English-Arabic dictionary, and knowing that Arabic comes in many forms (Egyptian, Gulf, Eastern, etc.), I would greatly appreciate it if Arabic speakers could confirm that these terms are correct and they are the onese used here in Doha.

In my experience, it is also better to associate new words with something so that they are retained forever in your memory. Try it!

yes dpatrick, you are right

and here are some useful words for insulting purpose:

Hemar = donkey

Kalb = dog

Baghl = mule

temsah = crocodile

bakara = cow

Lobot, according to my limited Arabic knowledge, "enta hamar" actually means "you are a donkey," which is commonly used to insult someone.

Qataris use classical Arabic heavily so using these words is definitely ok. You can use them in any Arab country and they'd be understandable because they are THE words to use for sunny/cloudy... the dialects change them around a bit, that's all.
