Virtual Friends v Real Life Friends

Which is better? There is something to be said about never meeting people face to face. Or am I wrong?

I think there are a lot of people on QL who portray themselves to be something that they are not... I am not saying all but I have had a couple of cases where someone has told me information about them selves and the next thing I know there is a wife sending me an email asking me to stop being in touch with her husband when all I was told is that the guy is in Doha alone and looking for a "friend" to talk too....  !!! Obviously his profile is incorrect..starting from nationality to job to everything.

Have also had case where so called "virtual friend" decides to meet up and never turns up .....

So I have learnt to be very careful in who I talk to and what information I give out, people I decide to meet up with,....

The imaginative ones may associate a face/image with the personality which exudes from someone's ideas or posts. Herein lies the shallowness as a beautiful mind or heart may not necessarily be accompanied by a face to match it.

Well if anyone wants to meet me, I will be out celebrating my birthday. Thing is, I am starting early at 5pm because of happy hour, so if you want to talk to me, you had better get there by 5:30 cause after that my brain is not going to be functioning properly and I will be talking even more rubbish than normal. But be warned, a lot of my friends will also be there, and their singing is awful once they have had a drink or two.

Once again just to be clear. I have met hundreds and thousands of QLers this year alone (ok slight exaggeration). I am not pondering if I should meet anyone, and if I was I would not be seeking advice on the subject on a public forum. I am asking if in your past experience, when you have met someone face to face having got to know them online first, were you disappointed?

By Milky_BarKid• 29 Jun 2011 10:59
Milky_BarKid

jacyca, that true indeed, A friend in need is a friend indeed. You hit the target by saying that even if we are close to virtual friends their absence will not be much felt, but the real friends short absence will be noted and they will be missed..:)To all my real friends I miss you guys..:)

TB- it all depends on your expectations- the higher your expectation is,  the bigger chance of disappointment ( when it turned out differently to what you expected).

Virtual Friends- We never met them or probably won’t, but this what allows you to pour your feelings to them., and we dont think much of them when we are off line and probably won't be too disappointed to lose them.

Real Life Friends- people that you get to see often (or at least you know that is existing and you can call them anytime) The thing about them is that they make it a point to keep in touch with you because they actually do miss you, and they really want to spend time with you and know what’s up with your life, and share with you theirs.

Both "friendsheeps" (lol) are beneficial... so it really depends on you on how to keep that friendship alive ;)

Rizks is a classical example of existence in the virtual world, hardly ever seen in the real world. In my four and half years on QL, see him more or less every day on QL but only once or twice in person. He never leaves his virtual world, He is a true virtual being.

when virtual friends made based on skin color, nationality posted which may or may not be true, for some particular purpose in real life, then disappointment is bound to be there because both sides are not true to each other & when the purpose is either fulfilled or there seems no possibility of it getting fulfilled they try to walk away. while making friends one should see into the patterns of other trying to make friends with & and the purpose......., if one is patient enough, virtual friends turning into real can be an easy process.

It can end in disappointment because reality is usually much different. In the virtual world you build up images and perceptions of others. In the real world, they can turn out to be totally false.

Blimey PS... were you up all night typing that? Well thank you so much for taking the time to reply, but just to clarify my vaugue post what I am asking is; if meeting virtual freinds in person is a one way door. Once you have walked through the door there is no going back, how often has this ended in disapointment for you?

what is an online friend?

By anonymous• 29 Jun 2011 05:52

TB - How a person talks and acts whether virtual or real doesn't necessary implies that d person u r talking to online is d total opposite of the virtual one once u meet them. Though people seem to be very active online and quiet in the real world doesn't mean they are not d same person. There are things that could be easily expressed virtually but takes a lot of courage to be expressed in person. Virtual friends may sound like they're trying to impress u but even in the sense of talking to someone face to face some people try to impress u too by the way they talk and carry their selves. There will always be people who r very different virtually compared when u actually talk to them. They r probably shy to be themselves infront of u or they r just pretending to be someone they're not virtually for possible reasons like: 1- They need some time to get out of their shells and be comfy enough to show their true colors, 2- they are insecure and they try to  cover up their imperfections just to be accepted, 3- they r just fooling around bec.they got nothing to do and they rejoice in other people's stupidity..Which is better is to meet people personally but if u get to know someone virtually there's no harm in that as long as u r cautious enough.

I know u r smart enough to never ever trust anyone u haven't met in person, it's even hard to trust people u have known for years how much more if they're just typing everything u know about them right? It's very essential to never let yourself fall easily into a trap. It's always necessary to know the mechanics of the game before playing it.

Are u in a limbo between ur desire to trust your virtual friend who seems very nice to u and ur doubts about his/her identity? (just asking..) u could also ask for a copy of his/her ID card for further reference..(kidding)... :D

some of my very close friends were initially virtual friends..but then they are only few of the dozens i met online..its often that people turn out to be totally opposite in their real life..i guess such people use internet to be someone they wish they were in real life
