Take a Karwa bus Everywhere, get to know the routes and roads. People will be begging to be your friend. Especially if you can study travel times and directions!

You could also get connected to MIT open courseware, and study. Also I would recommend getting a car, as everyone loves someone with a car. It will be easier to make friends after. Unless all your friends have cars, then you will be in the exact same spot.

If you can make a friend with a vehicle, I find people generally like to share and give rides to people in their cars. I have some friends without cars. We take the Karwa. They are pretty cool, and admire how I know all the bus times.

also negotiate with the taxis. I usually find, when needed, I can take one cheap to get close, and another cheaper to get exact. Sometimes you just have to be in the right spot to get a shared taxi ride.
