Interesting picture...

Came across this picture and I wonder if this is what everyone in this culture thinks/believes.....

British man came to Sheikh and asked: Why is it not permissible in Islam for women to shake hands with a man? The Sheikh said: Can you shake hands with Queen Elizabeth? British man said: Of course not, there are only certain people who can shake hands with Queen Elizabeth. Sheikh replied: our women are queens and queens do not shake hands with strange men. ________________________________

Then the British man asked the Sheikh: Why do your girls cover up their body and hair? The Sheikh smiled and got two sweets, he opened the first one and kept the other one closed. He threw them both on the dusty floor and asked the British: If I asked you to take one of the sweets which one will you choose? The British replied: The covered one. The Sheikh said: that’s how we treat and see our woman....

to raise your feet on the chair (as in the picture) if there is no one in front of you?

If that is your own room or house, FINE, but is it?

When this caption first appeared here in the forum, the picture shows a fully-covered woman and a lady in a bikini so I would say caption is appropiate because the comparison was somehow similarly presented. But here (wherever you copy the article), the caption was not justified as they were other issues involved. And that feet atop the backrest of the front seat is an issue to me. EXCUSE ME!

Lol @nomerci...it was meant to be, the picture came with the story. Instead people are focused on the way the British lady is sitting and my teaching career....

Yeah TB struck again :) ....and you are clearly one of the people he is referring to when he says "....scrutinised by judgemental QLers who have nothing better to do than pick fault in anything and everything they see."

I don't think any of the three people in the photo could give a rats about what any of us think. They are not posing and this candid shot catches them relaxed and unaware they are being scrutinised by judgemental QLers who have nothing better to do than pick fault in anything and everything they see.

To my Fellow QLERS, Redtreble, MissT and whoever else, Do you really belive that sticking to ettiquett is archaic, ????and it is OK by your cultural standards [or the lack of it] to sit with your feet popped up on the seat in front?and if you still need me to point out the folly in this situation, [ this action is just as revolting, even if it were a man]…….. I REALLY CAN’T be bothered with crass , classless, uneducated folks …….I would really be worried about the condition and the kind of morals this miss is imparting to her students,...GEEZZZ,... the kinds of “things” we unsuspecting parents have to put up with!

@ my friends who wanted to know why this lady is having an identity crisis, she just has to PROVE she is so different from the Abbaya clad lady that she goes to the extend of sitting in an unhealthy position ergonomically ,aesthetically, and etiquette wise! This inspite of wearing a well aerated ,casual Tee.How much further do you want her to run away from the abbaya?BTW, why does she feel the need to distance herself so much from her neighbor?

Different culture, different perception.

But despite any differences, there's always a chance for reaching out. (that's how friendship works, right?)

To each his own.

I didn't find anything wrong in the pic nor the post.

I do the same thing sometimes, but i do make sure there's nobody in front of me or even somewhere near my seat. It's a relaxing position actually. I'm just being REAL. :)

The two ladies in the picture are sat next to each other, thus I think it's safe to assume that they are friends. They seem to be able to respect each others culture perfectly well. Why can't people on QL?

"The answer to these questions is simple.."We bedouins didn't have enough self control and we mostly succumbed to our instincts...thus the rules".

The truth hurts, but no one wants to hear it!!

I wonder how many have read the Muqaddimah of Ibn Khaldoun. He clearly expresses that the Arabs are "savage by nature", and therefore it was necessary to give them strict rules!

By Missteacher• 4 Mar 2012 08:29

Oh dear Lord....would people stop with the whole, "oh your a teacher, you should think this, oh your a teacher you shouldn't do this..."

If you are a business person, people don't say, "oh well if you show this to your clients it wont be good for the company..."

This a social forum ...NOT my job! Unless I chose to include my profession in my forum, please leave it out the thread. I read this story with this interesting picture and wanted to share and find out what the general opinion of it was.

Its your opinion that the way she is sitting is ill-mannered, fair enough. In my opinion, she is not causing harm to anyone, she is not exposing herself, she simply relaxing and spectating.

Just to put it out there....if it was a man sitting like this would it be acceptable. As you say;

"...and to think that she's a woman?"

It does not oppress women at all unless they are forced to wear it. Those that do wear it are very brave to be able to do that and it shows how much respect they have for themselves. I have nothing but respect for those who choose do wear the veil and I don't like it when people make comments about people that wear headscarf's and wear a hijab.

If you can wear very little clothes; then why can't you wear clothing that covers you completely?

as per your thread. Actually the content of your thread was already discussed before here, so I would rather discuss the picture as it's part of your main concern, right?

And anyway you look at that picture, the lady in casual dress is ill-mannered as shown by her feet on top of the front seat. Now if you dare to justify the action as "modernization", well maybe to you, but still ill-manner to me. And if you're a teacher indeed, you won't show this picture to children because it will not give them good impression.

It would seem Polkadots & Flor1212 are stuck in the 1950's!

& don't be ridiculous...why on earth would I teach anyone how to sit in a spectator arena?! This is not even the issue....people divert the topic of discussion & waste the threads.

putting your feet at that position is not wrong to you? Do you teach that or encourage such behaviour? Even if nobody is in front of her, that's disgusting to justify such unpleasant manner and to think that she's a woman?

By Missteacher• 3 Mar 2012 23:48
Missteacher

@polkadots - can you explain why you think the lady without the veil has an identity crisis, I don't really understand this. Personally I don't see anything wrong with the way she is sitting...different story if she had a skirt on.

Secondly, how is the the lady in the veil restricted? She can do everything the unveiled lady can do, can she not??

Normally I would let clueless people to your extend, just wallow in their ignorance, but then again I am being generous today

Below is Copy/paste from the first site of many, you may want to educate yourself, here's the link[Sigh....]

Polkadots - Congratulations. I've read a lot of crap on this forum but you've set a new standard with that post. What a load of unmitigated garbage.

Wtf do you know about that woman? And why can't a 'lady' sit with her legs like that?

By anonymous• 3 Mar 2012 22:34
anonymous

The lady in the Blue Jeans is not more emancipated than the Lady in the Abbaya, one is restricted by a veil on her being and the other is restricted by a veil on her mind[identity crisis] and logical reasoning!. Did she seriously believe that [1] It is acceptable ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD for a Lady to sit with her legs lifted to chest level,[2]That the head rest of seat in front can be used as a foot rest?

Surely not @ nishantvshah....that would be a case on its own no?

There are husbands who beat up their wives in western cultures/societies, so surely we wouldn't taint all westerners or other cultures with the same brush?

To comment on my forum - I think its a nice wee story but don't really like the negative message it sends about the 'open sweet' not being chosen as it is dirty and unclean. i.e western women.

However, maybe the message is not trying to be negative, only trying to show a positive message for covered women.

Anyway...think its very interesting :)

BTW, My question still remains (been asking this every time i see this story). I would like to get the address of the sheikh coz i got a couple of questions to ask him.

Why beat, rape, kill your women if you treat them like a queen?

The comparison between women and candy is very simple to understand, but to stubborn people with narrow thoughts and imagination; no point can be proved... so people who want to expose their bodies in public and spread the dirt around, theres no difference between dirt and purity !!

By nomerci• 3 Mar 2012 18:21
nomerci

what does dusty/dirty candy have to do with women?

I'd certainly hope this is just a stupid joke and nobody would make an analogy between candy and women in reality.

That looks like how my big sis and I do when we go out together..People are always like "wha??" when they hear we are actually REAL sisters..ha ha!

Seriously..no that's not how everyone feels and the so called Sheikh is obviously voicing his own(chauvinism tainted) opinion. We women are NOT candy...sheeesh! that's so degrading really. Our Lord created us for far better things than what this Sheikh is making us out to be. Yes He ordered us hijab, but the reasons for this is also far more greater than us being wrapped candy for men.

And finally anyone and their dad would like to play wise scholar but it takes a lot more than that for anyone to reach the state of wisdom required to be the kind of scholars we Muslims should take our knowledge from. Neither the Prophet, nor his companions, nor the pious scholars of Islam would have responded to the dude the way this "Sheikh" did,Allahu Alam!
