family monthly budget and salary at CMU

We are family of 4 and I just got an offer letter from CMU to work as research associate

I just spoke to CMU and they confirmed that my package is good and that I will be at least saving 3000 USD per month with this package. Do you this is true ??

So to make it easier. my offer of salary is 16,000 Rials per month + fully furnished appartment in WestBay + all utilities are free + free private health insurance + free school tuition for kids starting for KG. Also they offer 17 paid time off per year.

is it a good package ? Can I really save 3000 USD with a 2 kids and wife ?

We usually cook food at home so no frequent restaurant and we are muslims so no alcohol.

I will buy a used car and maybe need to travel once a year back home.

So basically my expected budget will be.

food: 1500 Rial per month
car insurance : 130 Rial per month
gaz:200 rials rial per month
cell phone: 200 rial per month
clothing: 400 rial per month
misc expenses : 570 rial per month

Total:3000 rials per month
salary : 16,000 rials per month

possible saving : 13000 per month 3567USD per month !!

I am waiting for your feedbacks.

you can spent less for food. if you eat instant noodles.

Car in Souk Haraj u can fine 2000 model in 12,000QR.

Gas is cheap 15 QR only. School only paid for tuition fee.which is less then bus transport and book and other activity. better you ask your company to leave out and you can have sharing flat in less then 2500QR so you can save money from that. My friend if you want to save many way to save if you want to spent many way to spent.its doesn't matter what realign you are. if you want to save all your money better keep your family at your home country and and you can just spent 1500 only rest you can save.

Now better stop dreaming and act like smart man

The living expense is not that high if you have a good plan. But please confirm the minimum salary requirement for your family's visa which needs to be submitted at the immigration for approval. Recently my cousin got his family's RP (wife, 2 kids and one maid) and the requirement was above 15000 Riyals if the family is including one child. Your case is a bit difficult in the case of family RP. There are certain slabs at the immigration and it depends on the number of the family members that you have. So have it cleared with your relatives or friends who live in Qatar. The minimum salary slab for wife RP (without kids) is 10,000 Riyals. There are other formalities that you will have to wait for at least 5 months in order to get your bank statement which is an important document needs to be submitted along with your family RP application. Their procedures are weird. Please take this in a positive sense and it's not to discourage you but to make you aware of the system. So please double check before you leave your beautiful country. Anyway, good luck.

I think others are covering it. TV is crap here so you will want to get a cable package. Looking at 250 QR a month probably more. Do you want to call home or others without Skype? That's expensive as well.

Yes there are free things to do here but you can spend 200 QR without even thinking about it one trip out.

I have a family of 3 here in qatar. And I'm spending about 2,500 - 3,500 riyal per month for food, groceries and going out twice a week. And your airfare? not included in your package? that tells a lot cause you are going to spend atleast 4,000 riyal each return ticket a year. that is 16,000 riyal a year, so where is your savings then it will all go on these.

Mr. Ocean..1500 Qatar riyals per month for food? That is only good for one person. Food is very expensive here compared to the US. The same with house rent..You will be saving peanuts if there's any.

mozaismyhero Can you explain why my numbers are wrong and what are the correct numbers ?

For the dress I usually dress in the White Arabic Robes since I am from Arabic origin.

there is many outdoor activities in Qatar that are either free or low cost I guess.

Thanks Mandi for the feedback,

yes if I a buy 25k second hand car, the 4% will be correct.

yes Internet and Tv are included for free.

my food expenses in US are less than 400$ per month.

Even if double clothing it is still a fair offer I guess.

Of course we plan to go out with my wife and kids to get advantage of the many activities in Qatar.

Also, do you know if my wife is autorised to do some kind of work while in Qatar ? she has a bachelor in chemistry and she can teach french language in private classes.

3000 QR a month maybe but not dollars. The only thing right on your list is gas, unless you want to dress in traditional Indian robes and never leave the apartment except for going to work.

On the plus side air is free here.

Doha is a VERY expensive place to live, even more so than New York. Your estimate on car insurance is way low - it's 4% of the car's value per year. Add 20% to your food bill in the US for Doha costs. Clothing is almost double. Qatar Airways is a monopoly so expect

high fares. Are your internet and TV included? These are quite pricey as well. And you and your wife and kids may want to get out of the house once in a while!
