IT job in Qatar Government and Ministry?
Hi All,
I have been recently interviewed by a government organization which is actually one of the ministry in Qatar for a Manager level position in their IT department for IT security and governance.
I have studied in the US and then worked in the UK for past 11 years. While I am still waiting for a final offer my recruitment agent has pointed to me that the offer will be in the region of 30k QAR all inclusive, even housing I will have to pay out of that salary.
Please note that I am an Indian citizen, and decided not to take the British passport. However, my agent asked me to apply for it if I want a better salary, so I have applied for it and a response can come any time since I applied about two months ago.
I have following questions.
11 years of western experience in IT and Security field which is combination of working for an Indian outsourcing company provided services to clients in UK and then moving into retail banking IT, is the salary reasonable given my Indian nationality?
If I get my UK nationality in time, how much more can I negotiate?
What salary I am getting right now and how much I am saving is a bit irrelevant as I want to be closer to India and also the market here is very uncertain. So leaving UK at the moment is a no brainer, but I also do not want to sell myself below market rate.
Thank you.

I had an offer as IS Adviser for a Government entity in Qatar, total package is 37K (all inclusive). I have half of your experience, Jordanian national.
I think you should ask for not less than 45K p/m.
Thank you vivme. Let them come back with offer, will update you here.
Expats are also eligible for regular positions in most ministries. But again, these would typically be for Asian and other Middle Eastern passport holders as the government pay scales are not very generous and may not seem lucrative for those coming in from Dollar, Pound and Euro regimes.
As you have applied for and are expecting your British passport soon, I would say 40K is a fair ask.
Thanks vivme. I do not know which type of position it is. The job title is manager, do you know what it means? All I know that it is not a term specific position and is a full time permanent position, but it may be 3 year contract as you mentioned and then renewed annually.
If it is a specialist position then how come they interviewed me and nearly selected even though I am Indian? You believe I should be asking for more than 40k as the going rate? You have experience or knowledge of IT security manager level salaries in government ministries?
Do expats also get regular positions that is housing and other allowances on top of a basic salary? I thought it was for the Qataries only.
You have regular positions with the ministry and specialist positions. For regular positions with unlimited contract, your salary is very good. But these positions come with additional housing and other allowances.
If you are being considered for a specialist position, you will be given an all-in salary and that would be much higher (atleast 40K). Some of the ministries reserve these positions for western passport holders. Typically, these are 3-year contracts
Your salary is way to low.. Anyways it all depends on your liifestyle.. Are you a family man, do you have kids and if so did you consider schooling?
Hi,
My background also completely IT field and from india.
According to MNC companies and If you work in india itself You will get 1.5 lakhs per month minimum and already u r having 11 years experience in UK,so I feel that salary is less. It has to +6k QAR with this..
But, Budget wise You can easily run stylish life with 15000 QAR itself.
You checked with higher level villa,No.. Please check the appartments. You get good apparments with fully furnished in 6000 QAR per month in main city Doha.
So, Conclusion is You can enjoy with "30K" QAR with family and savings also..
But,Based on your studies and experience this is less salary..
Thanks..
Thank you manuprab. Are you suggesting this based on your experience of IT security roles in Qatar government and ministry sector for the amount and type of experience I have highlighted?
When I went for interview, i looked at a few villas and flats on dubizzle, they are well above 15 to 20,000 qatari riyals, how can you get in 5000 QAR?
30K QAR is really good...10K reqd for family visa eligibility..2500 monthly expenses if family is der...5000 QAR..u get a splendid flat..leaves u with 20K QAR plus..which is really good..if u can try to negotiate 2K or 5K more..once u get ur Brit passport !!
