Job offer

Hey everyone! I am new to this site and I've been looking around for some advice but a lot of boards aren't really as active as here.  I need some opinions if that is ok.

I've been offered a medical job in Doha and the salary offer seems good, but I can't really tell.

They want to offer me  QR 28,668 per month and that includes allowances for housing and transport.

They said its QR 8,000/month for housing and 2,000/month for transport and 18,668/month for salary.  Is that good? Will I be able to save a bit on that in Doha?

The money they quoted me doesn't include flight costs for moving there and vacation, which they said they also pay for.

Thanks for your help!

edit: BTW, its just me and my dog moving there.  I'm a single guy with no kids.

Rents are rising now because of the construction for FIFA, the new underground, speculation, government building new schools etc. There's a lot going on besides SIDRA

That sounds great! It was a simple interview as far as the questions were concerned. They didn't try to trick me or ask weird questions. Typically, medical interviews are straightforward. Can you do the job? Have you done this before? Why do you want to come out here? That sort of stuff. But they did ask about a weird detail that I almost forgot I included on my CV. Caught me off guard a little.

Oh ok.. From what I've heard from friends re interviews with Middle Eastern companies, they seem quite short and not as complex as the ones from companies from the UK or US. I do hope I get the opportunity to interview and impress, as we'd both, me and the mrs (qualified teacher), would like to work in Qatar.

As a pharamcist, you should be offered an insane amount of money. I think its exciting as well, but I do have some reservations about the whole completion process. The interview went well enough. Started on skype but turned into a phone interview about 15 minutes in. My skype connection turned to shit and we cut out about 3 times. Either way, it went well enough. They just went pretty thoroughly through my CV. If you have something in there, be prepared to be asked about it. They missed pretty much nothing. So be honest.

Thanks for the info, xrayvision2.. I've applied for a pharmacist position. It seems like an exciting project as its all been built from scratch along with the mass recruitment going on too. Can I ask how your interview was? I assume they asked a lot about how you'd find Qatar..etc..

Its hard to tell how long it will take. I've only recently been given an offer, but it was just a provisional offer. I have no idea how long it will take for the rest of the process. As far as I'm concerned, they can take their time. I still a while left on my current lease.

As far as moving there before the opening, it depends on what level of employment you are at. They told me that if you go there before the opening, you will assist in set up and departmental planning. Which is fine by me.

What job are you applying for?

I've applied for an Allied-Health role with Sidra recently and waiting to see what they say but so far it seems positive as I've got past the initial stages. How long does the whole process take from when they make you an offer to moving to Qatar? Also, if they're opening in mid-2015, wouldn't expats move just before then?

I don't follow how the rents are already rising for the FIFA thing, which will most certainly shit the bed.

My recruiter said that Sidra is geared to open in March of 2015, but I don't know how set in stone that is. I don't drink much anyways so affording alcohol is not much of a problem, but I get what you are saying about the costs of things.

Your biggest problem will be finding accommodation that will take the dog. Western "style" apartments in areas near to your work, which you will want because of the traffic, will probably use all your allowance (maybe more). Also, rents are rising here in the build up to FIFA 2022. What you can afford now may not be priced the same in 2 or 3 years and your employer is unlikely to raise the allowance unless people start leaving in significant numbers.

In answer to gj06mab03, dogs need all the recommended yearly vaccines you would give them at home, the rabies certainly will have to be within a certain time frame of the pet travelling (I believe it is about 10 days), and a good health certificate from the Dept. of Agriculture vet within the same period. Your regular vet will not be accepted, it has to be a government document. You will also need an import permit from Qatar. There are pet relocators or possibly your employer's PRO can assist with that.

If you live and work in this part of the world you will get used to the silence and drawn out waits. It was announced on www.dohanews.co that SIDRA may be delayed in opening, which could account for the inertia the two of you are experiencing.

I don't know what either position pays in North America - if it's the same as your current take home pay or not significantly better, it's probably not worth it. Life is expensive in Doha, the cheapest beer is about 30 riyals a pint in hotels (the only place to buy a drink) which is about USD8 or CAD10 at current exchange rates. There is a liquor store, a case of 24 beer (cheapest) is about 150QAR - you will need your employer's permission to get an alcohol permit.

I applied for a clinical nurse leader position and am from California. With your line of work I am sure we will cross paths at Sidra. When is Sidra requesting that you move? And have you gone through the whole vaccines thing? Do we need vaccines? I also see that you have a dog, will they be letting you take your pet right when you move? One last question, does your dog need special vaccines too?

Thank for letting me pick your brain.

My pleasure! I think it's just the nature of how things are done in that part of the world. Slow but it will eventually get done.

I am from the states. Texas. What type of job are you applying for and where are you from?

Thanks xrayvision2!!! You have given me a bit of hope. I can't imagine how much longer you'd have to wait for the other formalities. I wonder if it is dependent of when you are expected to make the move... Are you from the United States? I'm just trying to get an idea of what my offer might be. Overall I hear Sidra makes VERY fair offers, but the period of silence waiting to hear seems endless. I'm sure you can relate.

As far as accommodations are concerned, I need to find something that's at least dog friendly. I didn't want to spend my entire housing allowance but if I have to, that's ok. I think it comes out to be a little over $2000 per month usd. Which isn't bad at all. But a little space wouldn't be bad.

Can you recommend something?

Good Offer then, take it and welcome to Qatar.

Airfare to and from your home country will be shouldered by the employer because you were hired from abroad but within the limitation of your contract which will be mentioned as yearly or every two years. And since you have no idea what you will be expecting here, may I ask what kind of accomodation will you be looking for? You might shell out for a more private and more comfortable accomodation.

Well sir or ma'am, I'm not an MD. I agree that's bad for a doctor. But since I'm an xray tech, my total compensation at this position will triple my current net salary. Money I could never hope to see in this field.

If you are a westerner and an MD, to me the offer is peanuts.

Hey there! Thanks. It took a couple total months to hear back from them. Almost to the point where I either stopped caring or gave up hope all together. Then one day, I got an email from my recruiter with an offer. Now that I have the offer, I have to wait for a more official agreement. No idea how long that will be.

I'm not sure what level I am in, but I know my position is supervisory/lower management.

Hi xrayvision2, I am currently awaiting for an employee agreement from Sidra. May I ask you how long you waited to hear back with an offer. I know that currently there is a lot of hiring and there may be a delay in this process, I am just wondering how long you waited? Also what level in the organization did you get your offer in? I kindly appreciate any information. And congratulations on the attractive offer!!!

It is for Sidra! Thanks for responding. I was concerned about it being enough, but I'm not a big spender and I don't really drink. I do like good food though.

Hey xrayvision2,

That sounds like a good offer! You'll get enough money to save and spend on yourself in Doha.. Is it for Sidra?
