Ashghal announces completion of main works of 5/6 Park project
On the occasion of the third anniversary of the illegal blockade of Qatar, The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places under the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday announced the completion of the main works of the 5/6 Park project.
The fascinating 5/6 Park project which is set to be completed by the end of the year, according to an Ashghal press statement, will add to Qatar's captivating parks and also serve as a leisure and tourist destination for its citizens and residents as well as visitors to the country.
Apart from its unique name, the 5/6 Park comprises many attractive features, but the most striking of these is a large plant maze.
This feature, which is at the heart of the park, is similar to Qatar's map and is built over 6500 square meters.
Adjacent to the maze is a hill of about 5 meters above ground level "which gives a comprehensive view of the park from above, making it a major attraction for fans and photographers," Ashghal said in a tweet.
Another interesting fact about the park is the use of earthy materials to construct the indoor footpath. These materials are meant to create a natural desert shape similar to the local environment of the country.
Located in the Onaiza area the park has open green areas of about 107,000 square meters and also includes about 11,800 square meters of small shrubs and tree fences.

More than 1,500 trees have been planted at the park, with a focus on trees suitable for the country's environment. At least 10 percent of the trees planted are of Qatari origin, including Ziziphus Spina Christi, Acacia Arabica, and Acacia Tortilis. These "are evergreen trees that reach a height of more than 10 meters. Grow excellent in Qatar and bear the environmental conditions of high temperature and drought," the Ashghal statement adds.
The park will have jogging and cycling paths, play areas with games suitable for different ages, exercise areas, pedestrian paths, among others.
Additionally, there will be shaded areas for families to sit as well as areas designated for celebrations and spaces to showcase different forms of artwork.
Other features of the 5/6 Park comprise many utilities and service stalls such as restaurants, cafes, toilets and prayer places, in addition to garden furniture and lighting poles for park visitors at night.
About 80 percent of the project's works have been completed so far, according to Ashghal.
"Work is currently underway to complete the remaining works, the implementation is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year, and includes the lighting of the maze, but the final form will be completed after the growth of plant barriers," Ashghal stated.
Yesterday, to commemorate three years of the blockade, some artworks were displayed on 5/6 Arched on Lusail Expressway and the façade of the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ).
These were selected from the community's submissions in response to Qatar Museums and Ashghal's invite earlier.
An artwork, entitled 'Al Somoud,' designed by Faisal Al Hajri, a prominent artist in Qatar, will soon be showcased in the 5/6 Park.
Two more artworks have been added to the Park from the collection of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.
