Qatar Aalmi Urdu Award
RENOWNED Urdu scholars Jamil Jalbi of Pakistan and Prof Syeda Jaffer of India have joined the list of literary figures honoured by Doha’s Majlis Frogh-e-Urdu Adab.
The two scholars have been named this year’s winners of the prestigious Aalmi Frogh-e-Urdu Adab Award, instituted by the literary organisation.
Jalbi and Jaffer will receive the award, which carries a cash prize of Rs150,000 and a gold medal each, at a ceremony in early June.
Mohamed Atiq, chairman of the Majlis, said the winners were chosen by two independent juries, comprising eminent Urdu scholars. The Pakistan panel, headed by Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi, consisted of Iftikhar Arif, Khurshid Rizvi, Salim Akhter and Tehsin Farooqi. Inamul Haq Jawaid acted as the co-ordinator.
The Indian jury, led by Gopi Chand Narang, included Akhtarul Wasey, Shafey Kidwai and Chander Bhan Khayal.
Atiq said Dr Jalbi is a noted linguist, critic, writer, researcher, educationist and scholar of Urdu literature. Jaffer is also a writer, intellectual, critic, researcher and Urdu scholar.
Jalbi lives in Pakistan’s Sindh province, while Syeda is based in the southern Indian state of Hyderabad.
