Good Job Speed & Khanan QLVG
Students of the American School Doha (ASD) handed over a dozen trash bins they decorated a fortnight ago to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning on Thursday.
The project was initiated by ASD students Reem and Aleen as part of their class, Roots & Shoots.
The students sought the help of community website qatarliving.com’s volunteer group (QLVG) which served as a bridge to connect them to the ministry.
“We decided to come with this idea as because we live here in Doha and we wanted to do something for the city,” Aleen, a grade 7 student told Gulf Times.
“Some places of Doha have a lot of litter,” she added.
The girls were joined by high school students who got extra credit for the effort, according to ASD official Mike Johnston who is also the co-founder of EduCare, an environmental global issues and service learning initiative he started in Doha in 2007 and which has now spread its wings across the world.
“The students painted and decorated the bins with a variety of art techniques to make them attractive,” Johnston said.
QLVG head who goes by the name “Speed” and long-time member “Khanan” were also present when the bins were handed over.
“QLVG has previously worked on such environmental projects as Green Qatar Drive and various beach cleanups. We were only too glad we could help the students,” Speed said.
“We will decide later this week where we want to place the re-modelled bins,” said ministry’s Cleaning Projects operations manager Ayaz Rasheed
