guys thanks a lot for all the suggestions.....but i guess some of you are missing the point....
i am a full-time doha resident and am proceeding to india for my vacations sometime later this year.the earlier connection i took while i was there kinda..umm...died coz i wasn't using it or recharging it when i got back here.so now i was thinking of getting just an inactivated sim card here so that i will have a sim card ready with me when i travel to india.i will be going via delhi and don't want to purchase the sim from there as it will be on roaming charges once i get to my home state.....
i was thinking if i could get a card and after i land in india,i could call up someone back home and ask them to activate and recharge the fone, then it should work....but i'm not sure!
hey it is oki if you want to bring in airtel sim. i am using airtel sim here it works pretty fine but the only problem is call reciving and making it too costly to use the sim here in qatar.
you can recive the sms for free
about recharging the sim you can do it online there is no outlet here to recharge your airtel sim
airtel here has connection with qtel so your number will take connection here from qtel
about making and reciving the cost is 150 to 100rs reciving and making the call which i am sure you would not like it.
Why an Airtel sim here? It is expensive. You can recharge the cards online through some of the major Banks in Inda if you have an account with them but the card is to be bought from India preferably an Int'l Sim if you are planning to use it here.
thanks a lot....was just making sure.so it's best advised to purchase SIMs from India itself....probably from the airport,eh?
it will be a while before we actually reach home during vacations as we are visiting some other places too...we just wanted to have at least two working mobiles to keep in touch.can we simply purchase the SIMs from India, get it sent here and can the activation be done at a later time?
i ask this coz a relative is coming here soon and if this is okay,i'll ask him to buy two sim cards and bring it.will get it activated at the time of travel.

at svelte_saggi yes, you can do that but not sure if it would work here. we wasted money on 2 sims trying to get them here.
they were carried by my parents who were visiting here but the moment the flight took off from India, the sim stopped working.

NO. You cannot and that is illegal.
