DOHA: Shoppers and diners thronging Souq Waqif can now chill out anywhere in the Souq area as a major technology upgrade by Qtel brings free, unlimited wireless Internet access.

Souq Waqif, the historic attraction in the heart of Doha, and Qtel yesterday celebrated the launch of free Wi-Fi service at the Souq.

Khalid Al Mansouri, Executive Director of Qtel’s Business Solution said: “Now visitors to the historic Souq can enjoy free, unlimited wireless access to the Internet anywhere in the Souq, through Qtel’s ‘Hotspot’ brand”

That's a cool news though i don't bring my laptop with me outside the house unless i travel abroad. So there will be a sort of geek convention at Souq Waqif!

That is good news indeed. I prefere a seat taken for hours by an internet surfer staying in touch with the world, rather than a sheesha smoker.

I am eager to see the position of all those who rejected my previous proposal to promote more internet surfers in the souq, and discourage sheesha smokers, is Qtel anti-tradition? wait until you see the Ministry of Health taking its share of the souq's media attention.

The way it was worded in the gulf-times was funnier: "Traditional architecture, the heady aroma of spices, and free high-speed Wi-Fi internet access makes Souq Waqif, one of the most traditional souqs in the Gulf"

Hahaha, Wi-Fi makes it wayy more traditional. Reminds me of the old days, when bedouins roamed the dunes, on their trusty camels, surfing the net.

I think it's a nice mix of traditional and modern... Traditional architecture and modern communication. But I do hope that the internet users will be courteous in not squatting too long!

Probably Q-TEL in combination and approval with the business in that area are doing the free wire-less network to help attract more customers.

Honestly, I do enjoy that place very much. I would not mind having some kind of connectivity at all.

I never said anything about the dangers of sheesha or cell phones,

all i meant was the place loses its charm with all this modern stuff coming in one by one.. Slowly but surely its turning into an open air city center which is not the whole point of the place.. Im all for technology n wi-fi n what not... But not in this place.. but thts just my opinion !!!!

GodFather.

There should be only designated seats for laptop users,, just like smoking and non smoking so they don,t hog up the seats from everyone else..

10-4, good buddy..

Sheeshah is cultural, plus people actually physically chat to each other.

With this Wi-Fi, people will only hog the seats and just while away the time on the internet.. Personaly, I think that it shouldn't be allowed..

Though it does seem kind of lame to be sitting at "Hagen Dazs" eatin ice cream and being online in a traditional Arabic Culture place !!

then you need to ban all the cell phones, all shisha joints, since it is dangerous to your health, from the perspective and traditional arabic cultural place.

Damn..

That will surely "enhance" the ambiance of the place..

Lots of people sitting around "virtually communicating" via laptops..

Who thinks up these ideas ??
