I usually stay in the Imperial Hotels in Thailand "Imperial Mai Ping" in Chiang Mai, and "Imperial Queens Park" in Bangkok, the queens park is really nice, and not that expensive, it also has a nice park attached to the hotel for chillaxing out, and a great massage section (The real ones, not the licky massages)

I'd recommend that to anyone.

I am also not sure which location to chose, either closer to the river, or it doesn't really matter? how is taxi there? easy to catch? not gonna cost a fortune?

Try the Amari hotels. The Amari Atrium is quite centrally located. 4 star. Inexpensive. Some offer on for 1900 baht

The Amari watergate is a five star hotel. Great location as well.

I like the Peninsula, the Shangri-la and the Mandarin Oriental. The Marriott Resort (on the river) is also nice.
