From what I can see both myself and Ram (and others) would love to progress in the art of photography, I have seen some wonderful pictures (via links provided) and the opporutnities presented via Georgetown University.

However I believe that Qatar has some fantastic opportunities to develop the skills of the amateur photographer in a free time basis. I am by no means a pro but would love to start a group who are willing to develop skills in our free time (what little I do have). In conjunction with the "Girls trips out", "Boys trips out", "Calendar Events" I would like to suggest that all those intereseted in developing photography skills etc tag along to these events to portray to future/budding expats to the Qatar Living experience that this is truly a community experience.

With collective contacts a more widely available database of visualisations of the world of the expat and Qatari culture could be made available to the discerning viewer could be realised.

Hey benchyrac

I am actually the photographer that is coming, and we have formalised the courses and workshops a bit more.

Here are some details:

We will be running a weekend Basic Photography course to get everybody on the same page. That will include:

Understanding your Camera (and why it does what it does, and how to make it do what you want it to do).

Understanding light (and why it confuses your digital camera).

Understanding DOF (Depth of Field) and how it interacts with the rest of your settings.

Using Composition tricks to improve every aspect of your photography.

After that, we will be presenting 12 add-on modules (and you can join any or all of them):

1. Painting with light, Strobes and Creative Flash photography (Images like the fluid splashing out of a glass when a cherry falls into it)

2. Action and Sports

3. Wildlife and Nature

4. Commercial Stock (How to make money selling your images)

5. Studio Lighting

6. Portraiture

7. Still life and Art Photography

8. Wedding Photography

9. Macro Photography

10. HDR Photography (High Dynamic Range)

11. Photography as a buisness

12. Food Photography

Right at the end we will also do a six day Course that focusses purely on Stock Photography as an Income source.

On the Other side, we have a Basics of Adobe Photoshop course, with add-on modules:

1. Intermediate Editing Skills (editing for Stock)

2. Advanced Editing for Commercial Editors

3. Digital Scrapbooking

(Just a note. Our photoshop courses and workshops are very quality driven, Our basic course takes you about two levels past the standard for "Intermediate" skills - We just feel it's the stuff you need to work the program well, so why leave for a next course)

If you are interested, contact the people as mentioned above. We only take limited students so that everybody gets our full attention. It will definitely be a "first-Come, First-Served" basis for the bookings.

Regards

Sean

The period being considered is from 15 Jan 08 to end of February 08.

Some of the courses that he has mentioned include:

- know your camera

- introduction to photo shop

- photo shop editing for stock

- advanced photo shop

- food photography

- action and sports

- products and pack shots

Good idea, however as it will be a QL Community thing and the voting should really come from within this, is it possible to link the two together?

I can create a separate domain and a real gallery for us to use like http://gallery.lifeonthespot.com with probably a voting system and all. We can have our own accounts and image libraries.

but the problem is even if u have touch with camera

our field is limiting us in product photographing.. which is different than portrait or nature landscape..

non moving stuff.. u know .. and u r just shot it in dark room with ur light setup without flash in ur white tent.. but outside it's different..

the sun light change from minute to another.. u have to adjust the ISO (senstivity of the film) according to natural light and control the amount of light that u need by adjusting the shutter speed and much more ..which i don't know.. like filters and white balance n scoops ..

Now!!!

If anyone wants to get out there and start taking pics of architecture etc I say go for it, as soon as Qatari can create a page for us to upload our pictures then we can start posting.

As I said the subject is "Architecture" and its up to the individual on how you portray that in your photos.

Good luck to all and happy snapping!!

To all,

I have been in contact with Marijn, unfortunatly due to commitments etc both in and out of country the first meeting/workshop will not be held until after 4th March.

I will be arranging a venue (preferably free of charge)and a time that will suit the majority if not all of us.

In the interim, Qatari could you set up a page for us to post some pictures on.

What I would like to see happen is based on Qatari's voting system, people vote on the best picture taken per week, the prize for the winning picture/person is to chose the subject for the following week. As I said previously my suggestion for the first round of pictures would be Architecture (can be anything from a door to a sky scraper).

My only stipulations for this are 1. Picture must be taken in Qatar, 2. Dont cheat and download off the net, 3. Enhancement via software not allowed (apart from cropping of the picture). This was we will all learn from the workshops and via use of the camera and accessories (filters both coloured and macro).

weekly competition thing is a great idea and us all meeting up to teach one another is a cool one ( and thats not just because im the truths wife!!)....but i was thinking if we do the weekly competiotion should it be based in qatar - so archetecture in qatar as opposed to any other country in the world? I just think it could be unfair if we had it open? Does this make sense! is this a good idea!

Guys, I'm a fresh entrant to Qatar (and this forum) and this message caught my eye.

If anyone is willing and able to organise such a thing, I'd be able to lead a workshop around the technical aspects of photography. I can pretty much go as deep as you like on aspects of light, colour, optics, sensors, shutters, camera types etc.

I also have a working knowledge of the more artistic elements of photography (composition, subject matter and the like), but you'd probably be better off getting someone else to guide on that.

Since I hardly know the country, I'll leave it up to others to organise something, but if you do, feel free to contact me.

This tutorial is designed to help familiarize you with photographic terms, concepts and equipment, as well as discussing the techniques used for good photography. Reading each section will give you some insight and ideas that you can apply to your own photo sessions.

so much interest.

As for limitations on the group, I cant think of any at all especially not age!!

I use a Canon EOS 350D with multiple lenses depending on the situation and setting of the picture I am trying to take. I am still learning the art of photography myself and getting balances correct (white balance and shutter speed) is the hardest part.

Could be a good idea to suggest a type of photograph to take (e.g. a picture of heat) and its up to the individual to decide how the subject is portrayed. That way we are all not taking pictures of the same thing.

As I said before I will undoubtedly be at the World Superbikes event this coming weekend, however in the mean time I will make the first suggestion of photography....Architecture.
