From where I'm from we also use the points system and we jokingly talk about it as the pointless system. If you don't have efficient law enforcement, no system will work properly. In SA we have a standing report over holiday weekends on the death tolls on roads nationwide and if I compare one of our closest related provinces to Doha, the death toll will be around 30 per day. Rising death tolls won't trigger any corrective actions from anyone; civil or law. Our "drive to stay alive" campaigns don't even have an impact on rising death tolls.
Exactly Paul....i mean the point system is useless if no ones enforcing it or its being enforced on only some people. At least it will lesson the death toll, as ive heard most accidents happen on the roundabout(this is hearsay), im not sure if its true as i havent been here long enough. I can see how accidents happen on the roundabouts, its like people close their eyes and head to the RA and hope they make it to the other side...
mr.paul ... i am half agree with what you said. But doha population grows really fast. With all the extra vehicles on only a few kilometers of roads roundabout will take you forever to go through when the traffic busy. And also it is like doing russian roullete (spelling?) trying to cross the roundabout. If you wait too long, like 5 seconds or more!!! then you are intimidated by the others behind who think you should pull out when not safe to do so.
there were some notoriuous roundabout in Doha that i am glad they have convert it to traffic light. Maybe some oldies remember 'smelly R/A', 'Al Saad R/A', 'Crazy R/A','Mall R/A','Sports R/A'.
it is not actually wongqatar. Have you been to semarang? Jalan Pemuda have a big roundabout, then another one in Ahmad Yani airport with alot of traffic light just like television roundabout in Doha.
Very interesting,.... I heard also that R/A is design for horse, becouse horse (specially with caravan) can not make L turn smoothly, and should be not sharp turn.
In the UK round-abouts are used extensively. Qatar obviously adopted this system for their road network, perhaps because they were under British protection until the 70s.
In hindsight they probably wish they'd gone with the 'US' system of intersections!
This is a particularly famous one from Swindon in England, called Magic Roundabout. There are 5 small roundabouts in a circle;

And we can invite GUINESS BOOK OF RECORD and REPLEY's (believe or not TV show).

the worst culprits.
Just let the death tolls keep rising till something WILL have to be done !

paul how likely is it that people driving attitudes will change here. Without proper law enforcement, they are too dangerous...
attitudes of drivers, we should just change all the road layouts ?
Surely a safer, selfishless driving attitude is more important ?

Im always amazed at that too JBH..parking on the roundabouts....its weird...
Roundabouts can be things of beauty also, because you can plant things on them to make them look nice.
I still can't get over people parking on them in Qatar, I find that amazing.
Whereas traffic lights are just a road junction.
Call me Maninibat!
yes paul your right, which is why in Qatar they shouldnt exist...
I hope so Novi....
the drivers which is crap.
In UK where drivers have courtesy, manners and arent always in a rush, roundabouts work damn well to keep the flow of traffic moving .
[img_assist|nid=89096|title=.|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]
they are slowly Nadt ... at least now the whole C ring road all the way down are traffic light.
they should replace them with traffic lights, its a war zone because people dont know how to stay in their lanes....
You know tallyg there was something called a crazy round about in doha like the one in UK but that's demolished now I think.
it is not actually wongqatar. Have you been to semarang? Jalan Pemuda have a big roundabout, then another one in Ahmad Yani airport with alot of traffic light just like television roundabout in Doha.
novita77
Yup,.... some city at least 1 R/A in MAIN road, just to be as a symbols of "wellcome" or symbolic monument.
Maybe what u see is in housing complex
Thanks

You could make a progrm here actually ................. of all the 'non dangerous' driving, it would be just as much a novelty.
But then again they would be hard pushed to fill a half hour slot!!!!!!
Unless they follow you for the day ....
I was thinking about the telly programs in the UK showing police videos of dangerous driving.
You couldn't make one here, it would have to be a four hour program.
Call me Maninibat!
Paul tried to be more courtious when we go back to the UK, but he find it is really 'hard work' to concentrate after being so long in Doha road ...
Actually ... it is quite easy when everybody else drives well.
When in Rome ........
If I let the standards slip and then had to drive back home I would either be arrested or beaten up in the first week back.
I'll try to keep it up anyway.
Call me Maninibat!
I thought so JBH ... i can spot a newbie a mile off in Doha road. Give you another year ... and you wont be so benevolent
You will hate them all ... white land cruiser or not.
You must have seen me on a roundabout then Novi.
And I use my indicators!
I try to drive like I would at home.
I let people in front of me here just to see the shocked look on their faces, but it pisses the people behind me off though.
He He
Call me Maninibat!
JBH .... on the roundabout in Qatar you 'occasionally' have people in the right lane ...
And oh yesss ... i was being sarcastic ....
On the roundabouts in the UK you "occasionally" have people in the wrong lane.
It I am in the wrong lane there I usually go all the way round until I manage to get in the right lane.
They work very well if you know how to use them.
It's a little bit different in Qatar though.
Call me Maninibat!
WongQatar,
whereabout are you from in Indonesia? I see roundabout in Semarang in some places ...
Very interesting,.... I heard also that R/A is design for horse, becouse horse (specially with caravan) can not make L turn smoothly, and should be not sharp turn.
Thanks

sorted now. see above comment for pictures.
Oh joy. The pictures in my last comment aren't displaying because QL automatically changes 'roundabout' to 'round-about'. Grrrrr!!!
Hold on.
In the UK round-abouts are used extensively. Qatar obviously adopted this system for their road network, perhaps because they were under British protection until the 70s.
In hindsight they probably wish they'd gone with the 'US' system of intersections!

Imagine people trying to navigate that in Qatar!
could you imagine life if we have square-about or triangle-about? lol
***** I hope life isn't a big joke, because I don't get it. ******
LOL
nope,.............but this much R/A in MAIN ROAD,....YES
Thanks
WongQatar
so you mean to say that in this is the first time you sawa R/A :)
