Many places and every places and every place got something special about it:
1- Wakrah Beach, nice when it is high tide otherwise the bad smell of sea weeds would be waiting for you.
2- Intercon area, the right side of it is nice as those Jet-Skies can't reach there but sometimes you have to be aware as they are ready at anytime to do something crazy.
3- Sealine, the most beautiful place and got the best sand and water. Just be careful when the water is hot, the water is invaded by jellyfishes.
4- Al-Ghariyah, the place there is comforting and the beach is ok.
5- Dukhan, some places there are nice and good to swim as well.
Just in case you decide to go to Sealine, they charge 100 Riyals per adult + 25 for the car during the weekend. During the week it is 50. Not sure about the price for kids ....but I guess it will somewhere around the 50 for the weekend.
same answer as swissgirl. Never been there, but I heard a lot about it. you can even set-up tents there I believe. moreover, there are 4wd vehicles which you can rent I suppose. if there are, then that will be a treat as well. let me know, if you decide to go.
The beaches in Wakra and Sealine are too crowded on weekends. If you're not tight on budget, book an overnightstay at Sheraton Hotel, get a really nice suite, and you'll have an access to the beach at the back of the hotel. A kiddie-sized pool is also available for your kids. Enjoy your weekend.

last weekend we went to Al Ghariya, quite far out but worth the drive. very quiet, secluded, and serene beach and not so rough seas... very nice....
