Why are hotels so expensive in DOHA?

I mean c'mon are you serious??? Some of these prices are ridiculous!

Simply cuz they always find people who afford their prices !

maybe what suzbhaloua means is lack of affordable decent hotels/motels in Doha. In North America you can get a room in very decent Motel for 40-50 bucks. Not everybody can afford or want to stay in 5 stars hotels... and yes, Doha is focused on luxurious, expensive hotels.. you cannot find nice cozy budget places, like in NA...

jackmohan, i lost touch with apartment rate in Singapore. But over 8 years ago we paid about 5000 riyal or roughly about 2500 SGD for 3 bedroom condo. It has swimming pool, small gym .... landlord paid for the maintenance fee.

Here is the example apartment price in Singapore :

http://www.singaporeexpats.com/housing-in-singapore/singapore-property/code003679AR-apartment-condo-rent-CAIRNHILL-RESIDENCES.htm

That area is still walkable to orchard .... 6000 sing dollar a month still about 12.000 riyal ish ....

novita77...compare it to Appartment Rent rates....

I mean Doha Hotel rates is almost = Doha Appartment rates.

Hotel 450*30=QR13,000/month

Appartment = QR 9,000 to 15,000/month

Wonder how it is in Singapore? It cant be so close I bet.

'Mercure, which isn't fantastic are currently charging QR1150 for a double room - that's over $300. For $500 I'm getting a whole week in a top class hotel in Borocay!'

----> we paying 900 riyal for ShangriLa Hotel in Singapore with 2 adult + 1 children buffet breakfast for our summer holiday. The hotel located within walking distance to Orchard Road the main shopping belt of Singapore.

For westin we paid 99 USD ++ per room for 3 of us in Kuala Lumpur without breakfast.

And yes I agree with the original poster that hotel in Doha is over price.

The average price for a good hotel (Movenpick) is around QR700

and now its going down due to so many hotels....

Some hotels are giving monthly rates too...just like apartments...

Baldrick: Why walk-in? why not online booking where its much cheaper?

You can get a really decent room in a 4 star for 450QR incl of taxes, much better than mercure

I find the practice of restricting unmarried tourist couples from sharing a room to be a shot in the foot for some of the hotels here, and qatar's reputation as a forward thinking middle eastern country that's trying to attract people from all around the world.

Some hotels are ok with it, others ask for marrage certificates when you check in (at which point you turn around and walk out).

There is a fine balance between ensuring muslims adhere to their code, and forcing outsiders to submit; just as there's a balance between respecting the customs in a country (being discrete), and shoving everyone's face in it.

It seems some hotels understand the need for compromise, others are determined to force submission (or bankrupcy).

vote with money:)

Guys don't forget that the country hosts many events around the year from conferences to meetings & sporting events, so most of the hotels are pre-booked by the GOV, thereafter, as a hotel manager the GOV will be my target customer & the prices would stay up

Robert,

All Hotels here are majority owned by the state company QNH.

They couldn’t really care much if they are fare or not!

With the salaries they pay, they can easily afford low occupancy and even if they are loosing, QNH belongs to a rich state whose income is not from any business but poured freely daily from the Qatari subsoil.

We do tend to forget sometimes that this is not a conventional country!

The prices here are manipulated. Apart from conferences being held in Doha, most hotels are struggling with occupancy rates.

Same thing for the prices they charge for alcohol, no one wants to see competition for customers as they would all lose.

Timebandit and I stayed at the Intercontinental for a birthday celebration (don't ask how old I am, I may start screaming) last weekend, and it was great. It cost 1050 QR per night inclusive of tax. This is half what you would pay for a 5 star hotel in the UK (which wouldn't have the great pool facilities and beach location that the Intercont has). Doha wins as far the Bandits are concerned!

baldrick2dogs,

I was being sarcastic!

2000US$ is the salaries of hotel cleaners in the US (where similar hotels charge similar or inferior rates)!

My point was to stress the fact that in Doha the prices are the same and in some cases superior as in places where the salaries are more fare and balanced!

5 star Hotels In Delhi, India charge way more than Doha.

Hotels are very expensive in Doha because they need to pay the expensive salaries of the staff!

Imagine each cleaner making 2000US$/month?! Someone has to pay for their service!

It seems there aren't too many hotels here in Doha and they are being on a good demand, so they can leave the prices that high.

Take a look at hotel prices and offers in Dubai and you will see how prices have dropped drastically over there!
