Asian Games Opening Ceremony - The Real Story!

Despite the spectacular opening ceremony, which received high praise, there was some criticism by some delegations and athletes. Heavy rain poured down just after the end of opening ceremony, and many believed that the organizers did not have plans to deal with it, creating a chaotic situation. Chef de Mission of the Philippines, Butch Ramirez, said that some of the members of the Philippine delegation, including athletes, were soaked in the rain because the organizing officials did not allow them to re-enter the covered stadium for shelter; instead they had to stay in the heavy rain for more than 30 minutes. He goes on to say that the breakdown in transportation protocols due to the rain caused the athletes to rush to the nearest bus station, exposing them to rain. Ramirez said that he himself was a victim of pushing and shoving due to this chaos, and that because of it, he suffered from an asthma attack.

Malaysian athletes also expressed unhappiness. According to the athletes, the organizing officials allowed only the Qatari team to exit the stadium and held back the other 44 nations inside. Also, the disarrangement of transportation queues meant that they had to wait in the wet and tiring conditions till 2 a.m., when they were finally sent to the Athletes' Village.

A Japanese journalist said while a few buses and bus stops were prepared around the stadium, the organisers also didn't install shelters to protect people waiting in these stations. To be fair, it only rained twice in the two years since planning for the ceremony had begun, and the heavy storm during the actual opening ceremony is rare by Qatari standards.

In fact the transportation was not as troublesome as some reports indicated. For example, while organizers projected that it would take about 1 hour and 40 minutes to clear the stadium of delegations and athletes, it actually took only 1 hour and 15 minutes, with the last delegations arriving at the Athletes' Village before 1:00 a.m. Additionally, the Qatari team, which stood in the middle of the Stadium field during the Ceremonies, left in the middle of delegations, neither first nor last. The public spectator car parks were nearly empty less than an hour after the event.

As of this writing, there has been some confusion concerning the many volunteers working the games; as in many not showing up to their assignments, too many showing up at events or locations where they are not needed, and some complaining that they were being made to do work other than what they previously agreed to do, as in female VIP hostesses being told to go pick up trash outside on the streets. Many volunteers have been complaining about the lack of transportation needed to take them to their locations, as most are guest workers and have no privately owned vehicles. They are authorized free use of taxis, but they are saying the taxis are not stopping for them, despite the fact that they have been given vouchers by organisers. After a volunteer briefing/Opening Ceremony rehearsal at Khalifa Stadium one night in mid-November, hundreds of volunteers were stranded as they were unable to find transportation back into the city, most having to walk back and not getting to their homes until late at night. Sources say there were only so many buses, which were quickly filled, and despite being told the buses would return, they didn't.

According to one IOC insider who arrived back at his hotel soaked, this incident could hurt the chances of Doha hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics, which they are likely to bid for. Indeed, transportation is one of the crucial factors involved in the decision process.

The layman has been ignored ....

1. There should have been a ROOF for a stadium (especially for a country with a blazing sun).

2. There should have been FREE ESCORT (free bus ride) up to the Karwa Bus Station for everybody who wanted.

3. There should have been proper PARKING SPACES or at least the Vehicles parked outside should not have been fined.

4. There should have been FOOD ,restaurants & a lot of clean toilets for people to dine if the organizers wanted people at the stadium the whole day.

These were the 4 simple things that the committee should have ensured for the people to really enjoy the Games.

But with experience will come the ability to cope with such matter.

The committee should ensure to have more such competitions like Cricket Matches, Tennis Matches, Football Matches etc organised in theNIGHT ie after 7.00 as life in Doha start in the evening after 7pm till 11pm. Any time before this then the working people cannot come.....and then who do you expect to come (not everybody in Qatar works from 7am to 3pm)

I believe there is a session after the games at which the various national organisations prepare reports on the actual games for submission to the OCA (Olympic Council of Asia)the governing body.

No doubt all these issues will be brought forward at that time.

I am not sure if this report is made public.

the security guard (lady) just saying something 'cafe, cafe'. The daddy trying to explain again in english that the kid can't take any food from the cafe shop ... somehow this security lady just ignore it. She mumbled something in arabic and waved her hand everywhere. So the daddy have to approach another security guy from another lane and explain to him.

In the end he allow to bring the food for the kid.

Hi,

I only read about it in papers that some asian athletes complained of the rude behavior of Security Personnel.

But I saw it with my own eyes only the day before yesterday.

Venue:- Al Sadd Indoor Stadium

Event: Sepak Takraw

Time: 11.AM.

I didnt expect the crowd to be soo large. Anyways, work is work and the security personnel have to do their work!...but with some decency, patience and if possible, a smile on their faces.

This lady from a south east asian country is obviously a guest. She is also wearing some kind of blue colored pass that allows her privileged access(I dont know why she had endure the Queue in the spectator entrance).

She was carrying a small backpack. When she arrived at the metal detector entrance, this guard just snaps and blasts off into the stratosphere in Arabic. The gist could be made out from the tone, facial expressions and hand gestures which to my understanding went something like this- what the...DO you have to bring a bag for such silly games? Dont you know there is another entrance for ladies like you?..and so on...

The poor lady was seeing stars. By the time the crowd was growing and I also made it sound urgent by requesting him -'habibi-shoi sabr' and 'match start' and 'please'...etc.

I could see tears in this lady's eyes. I can bet she will not be in the DAGOC appreciation society.

The fantastic preparations for the 15th Asiad just goes up in smoke because of a lowly security guard?

Lessons must be learnt from this.

PS: I must say- At the same time, I saw quite a bunch of cheerful and helpful guards at the Aspire Stadium.

Really dont know what to make of this.
