Doha fishing

Hi all, I'm currently in Doha on a work assignment and desperately seeking the chance for a spot of offshore fishing from a charter boat, or anything else for that matter. Also, can anyone point me/us in the direction of reasonable shore fishing and whether or not permits are needed to do this.

If anyone can offer advice it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Ryan can you please give me a good place to fish onshore other than khor, and please additional info about your boat.

Thanks

In general they just have nothing better to do then harass the Expiates. It is very frustrating because sometimes we are past over by the Coast guard other times they wont leave us alone. meanwhile 14yro local kids on jet skis without PFD's going 130k never get harassed.

For Kayak fishing try:

Al Wakrah 1k out for Kingfish, Queen fish, sherri, barracuda, etc.

Fuwerit 1k out is good too, and lots of Cuttle fish.

Al khor and Al thakira are easy places to fish as well in the channels.

If anybody wants to come I have extra boats.

Cheers,

Ryan

So I have spent the last year exploring and fishing all over Qatar. What I find is that the catching is almost always poor. This lead to continual searching for new grounds. If you want to fish from shore it is very limited as it is very shallow most places. Fishing around the south end of the corniche can produce fish, but technically fishing is prohibited until you get to the dowh harbor. Most of the time we are fishing from Kayaks and Stand Up paddle boards as this allows us to get into deeper water. However I get harassed almost every time by the Coast Guard. sometimes they say "fishing not allowed" which is BS. Other times they say "very dangerous" which is BS.

Hi there, where you able to catch decent size of fish from fly fishing? I brought my fly-fishing gear also, but never had the chance to use it here only conventional spinning reel. I really want to learn the art of fly fishing, Hope you do not mind joining you and acquire some skills.

Regards

I had a really good time flyfishing South of sealine, high tide, and strode about 20m in. I used a seven weight - maybe to big a rod for the TONS of yellow spotted trevally. Next time I'm taking just the four weight. Fly-wise: there was surprisingly loads of dragon flies around, and consequently all fresh water immitations were grabbed. My only problem is / was getting stronger tippet. A normal bass rod would be great fun too :)

hey there, kabayan Gail...

not quite sure if Steve Clem's still around as his post is very much outdated but anyway, lemme share some thoughts. In addition to Andy's posts, the Corniche can be a rewarding spot for anglers like me... it's but a matter of time & tide: best to cast within 2-3 days after the new moon and within 2-3 days after full moon. Relevance of the moon? The Spring tides, as we call it. Best time during change of tides from high to low & vice versa. The bounty varies from the usual averaged sized silver bream (bakoko), occasional grouper (hamour) by chance, trevally, queenfish, garfish, needlefish, and the infamous rabbitfish (danggit). Your bait will tell the kind of fish you catch. Avoid the Pearl, anywhere in that area is strictly prohibited. If you're into Rabbitfish, best spot that I tried is Al Khor, right down the pier. Timing is very limited, make sure you dip your lines at dawn until about an hour after sunrise; I bet you won't even find time to light a cigarette as the danggit starts biting! An average 5-metre rod will do the trick: you can't handle an extra. Another good spot for rabbitfish is the Wakrah Port. Head straight up to the very fence of Wakrah Coast Guard station and fish to your right where the boats are docked. Otherwise, fish to your left and cast as far as you can for a variety of prey, including stingrays on live baits. Or yet, you are most welcome to join us on-board when we find another time offshore. We rent boats from the Dhow harbour. Anyone who's interested to join us in fishing trips (offshore, and share the cost of course ^_^)) may please email me at [email protected]. We usually take off from the harbour at 5am until 1pm on a Friday. Salamat po...

Thanks to all who have addded their comments.

Since posting this this see below my comments on the places to fish;

The Corniche

At the section that everyone fishes as mentioned, this is full of snags and you get snapped up a lot when fishing at distance, however there is a very small fish which can be caught on light tackle which when caught can be sold to local fish mongers for good money as it is a local delicacy so they tell me?

Al Wakra

The crabs are a pain in the butt, best use top feed rigs on very torque lines, but the results are poor.

Sea Line

Still to fish this but been told it is ok

There is a section of beach between the Intercon hotel and the royel villas which can be ok at high tide

The Pearl estary near to the The Diplomat Club

This section by the first bridge should be very good, given the location and long streches of water, but its not!

A lot of the locals sit here and socalise which is not too much of a hinderance.

There is also the long couseway point to the left hand side of the The Admiral Club by the Ritz Calton which so they say you are allowed to fish, but never fished it just used the pub!

Finally there is a section behind the Zig Zag tower A which by all accounts you can fish but also never tried it?

The option of using a boat and travelling out for a about 2 miles is really the only worthwhile option in my opinion.

haha, I can confirm Al Wakra has a healthy and large crab population-I even managed to land one. it's a pity there's no decent shore or pier fishing to be found just yet and I've contacted one boat operator but was told the seas were too high right now, I'm still looking though if anyone else has an idea.

Thanks for all suggestions so far.

Depends on your budget.  There are some adventure tourism companies in Doha which organize fishing trips.  Could be either a speed boat or a traditional dhow.  Sometimes the results are quite disappointing, since these boats have to ply a pre-determined route, which has been laid down by the coast guard.  The beaten path has been overfished.  Night fishing by expats in boats was previously not allowed.  You can check current status now.  The weather is cooling down a bit.  Maybe you could wait a bit longer, or you might get cooked on the boat in the sun.

Better option and more fun would be if a Qatari in your office has a boat and you go with him.  Then I guess night fishing would also be possible and you can go off almost anywhere, where there are plenty of fish.

If you would like just to test the waters initially, go down to the Corniche on a Friday morning and you would see a large number of people fishing.

Have you ever tried kite fishing?
