Top seed Nadal crashes out of Qatar Open
Spanish ace Rafael Nadal was beaten in the first round of the Qatar Open, losing to Germany's Michael Berrer 6-1, 3-6, 4-6 Tuesday evening.
Nadal failed to capitalise on three break points on Berrer's serve in the final game to draw the third set score even to 5-5.
Nadal recently came back from an appendectomy in November 2014 and has yet to find his form.
This is the first time Berrer is defeating a top-five ranked player. The 34-year-old father of two has already announced he's retiring at the end of 2015.
Qatar has a huge number of Nadal fans and some of them attending the game were disappointed to see the top seed crash out at such an early stage.
"I thought he would go far in the tournament after he won the first set 6-1, but Berrer surprised me. It's sad that he lost in the first round itself," said Ragib Nadim, who was cheering for Nadal.
Top seed Novak Djokovic will now be the favourite to win the tournament after he eased past fellow Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-2, 6-1 in just 59 minutes last evening.
