Who will win the Champions League?

sefri
By sefri

Hello everyone,

So, lets see your point of view and your expectations...

Who do you think will win the Champions League this year?

I am a Barcelona supporter (fanatic to be more precise) and would love them to win, but I don't know why I see Chelsea as the most determined side to do it.

So there you go: I want Braca, but expect Chelsea.

To help a little, the 1st leg results of the quarter finals were:

Villa Real (Spain) X Arsenal (England)= 1:1
Manchester United (England) X Oporto (Portugal)= 2:2
Liverpool (England) X Chelsea (England)= 1:3
FC Barcelona (Spain) X Bayern (Germany)= 4:0

Last year's champions are Manchester, but they are not as good this year, and have far stronger opponents. The score they got with Oporto is scrap, because a scoreless draw in Porto would eliminate them. I still see them going through though...

Chelsea have done best in the quarter finals; they have beaten Liverpool at Anfield, which is amazing, taking into account that the latter are regarded as the best team in the CL. Besides, Chelsea have little chance to win the PL, so they only have this competition.

Barcelona are the best team playing football right now and have a foot in the semi finals after thrashing Bayern 4:0. But they have not faced strong opponents so far and are competing in all possible trophies (La Liga, Spanish Cup and CL). I think they will be exhausted due to this and because all their key players also play with their international teams.

Arsenal are the weakest English team in the competition right now, and they were lucky to get a 1-1 draw at Villareal, who are not a strong opponent. I think they will pass, but their run is most certain to end in the semifinals.

Liverpool had a great chance before yesterday's match, but they would need a miracle to beat Chelsea by a difference of 3 goals back in London. They paid the price with some real stupid defensive mistakes! Maybe next year. To concentrate on the PL now (I am a Liverpool fan too)...

Bayern have conceded 9 goals in two matches in four days. They have a major defense problem. They were never favorites, but they did not even act as a CL team! The quarterfinals are their limit.

Oporto and Villareal: I don't know what to say? Lucky to be in the quarterfinals? Villareal was a real threat two months ago, but they have been going downhill ever since and have lost their best midfielder for the rest of the season. Oporto got very lucky in Manchester, but even if they go through, I think they will stop at the Semis.

Enough said, what do you think? Who will win?

Indeed a great year for Barcelona...

And a great year for football...

This was amazing!

In my Spanish company, the majority are Madridistas (Real Madrid fans), and all of them opted that Barcelona would loose all three competitions! (including my own brother)

They were daydreaming all along...

I showed up with a Barcelona shirt I bought in Barcelona in 2006 after that magical year on Thursday.

Everyone was with their heads in the ground (where it should be...!)

Although I am Spanish, I have become very fond of the way of the Catalans, and being from Sevilla, I can only pause with respect to what the Catalans have provided Spain with in the past few years...

If it were not for the likes of Puyol and Xavi, we would have never won the European trophy in 2008.

And now, with this new bunch of magnificent players, it all seems to be very promising...

Visca el Barça

Visca Catalunia

& Visca "San Juan de Aznalfarache-Sevilla"

This is the best thing that could happen to world football. Proof that playing attractive BEAUTIFUL football is indeed effective. The city of Barcelona was complete pandimonium yesterday and I was right in the middle of it. AMAZING! Sefri: We have to start a Barça Penya in Doha when I get there. This is incredible: Kings Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same year. In over 100 years of history in Spanish football NEVER has any team done that. I salute the best team EVER!

We have done it. My Barça has done it.

3 out of 3

Although Man Utd were considered favorites for many, they disappointed yesterday and it seems they freaked out!

I truly believe they made Barcelona's mission much easier and handed the Catalans the trophy... (Not that FCB don't deserve it nonetheless)

Ferguson opted for a conservative defensive game, in which his main objective was to stop FCB's forward line.

To do this, you play like Chelsea did and hope to be very lucky.

Barcelona played as their coach Pep said they would...

Fantastic attacking football.

They were all alive, and the three major absentees were never noticed.

Even Puyol (heart of the defense) got his chance to score.

The score board could and should have been larger as the real chances were for the best team on the pitch yesterday.

I say this as a football fan and not as a Barça fan:

FC Barcelona are currently the best team in the world without challenge.

They are also the most successful side that Spain has ever seen in their long history of football.

They are the kings of Spain and the kings of Europe.

Barcelona were crowned yesterday as "La Liga" champions after Real Madrid lost 3-2 to Villareal.

The same team that made us wait for another week (Villareal), handed us the league title by preventing Real Madrid from winning or even equalizing.

Now Barcelona can concentrate on the Champions League match on the 27th of May in Rome...

2 out of 3 and still hoping for 3 out of 3...

Well done Barça...

Barcelona have made it and won their 1st trophy of the season (The King's Cup) with a roaring victory over Bilbao yesterday (1-4).

It was a great comeback for the kings of cups in Spain after trailing 1-0 after only ten minutes.

Barcelona played without five of their key players due to injury and suspension, but still manged a great show of wonderful football, especially in the second half where all the stars were missing more chances than scored.

Anyway... 1st trophy... 1 down, two to go...

Villareal ruined the party yesterday!

They were playing to get the equalizer as if their lives depended on it! Well, most Spanish team do the same when they play against Barcelona...

I hope they don't even get to the EUFA...!

What's with the referees these days... another red card that should not have been given?! Abidal looks like he won't touch the ball again or he will be thrown out!

Anyway, we have to wait until next week.

If Real Madrid equalize, we don't have to do anything. It would be over by then. I am hoping they equalize with Villareal.

We must now concentrate on Kings Cup on Wednesday.

Iniesta won't make it, but he should be fit for the CL final.

Guardiola actually said that the most important trophy is "La Liga". He said it proved what team is better throughout the year. He is right...

Not this week but next week. Barça about to win the league (need one point only now) We have the King's Cup now on Wednesday (we should win but Athletic Bilbao is really motivated) and Andrés Iniesta is now injured. That sucks. Hopefully he makes it for the final of the Champions but doesn't look good.

It's hard to maintain the same pace but my guess is Guardiola has his eye on Rome more than anything else...

Barrilero: Cules hasta la muerte! Aun que soy medio Jordano y medio Sevillano... pero soy puro Cule...

But, lets take one game at a time.

I don't like to threaten or claim victories from now.

Today, we have to concentrate a lot.

Today, I think Guardiola should push forward and fire all cylinders at the start to get an early goal.

After that, we should play on the counter attack to try get another, and then kill the game by passing the ball around like we did three years ago...

If we are able to kill the game in the 1st half, Pep should rest three key players for Wednesday.

Then, we can speak about the next games... for now, one game at a time...

Sefri: Happy that we think 100% alike.

Baldrick2Dogs: Thank God we got rid of Chelsea. Ball posession 35% for Chelsea you mean. Without getting into the semantics the best team over time won! I will admit that I was much more nervous playing Chelsea than I am vs. Man U. Sorry about that. The good thing is that we have (and will) shut down your offense just like last year. The only difference here is that when on a neutral ground and only one game you will have to open up and score. The story of English football vs. Spanish. You will have to try to play more like us. Good luck. And may the best team win. We both know who that is.

It seems Valencia did us a big favor and beat Real Madrid 3-0 yesterday.

This means that, if Barcelona win today against Villareal, then they will be the official league champions 2008/2009.

The 1st dream may come true tonight and I hope the second can follow on Wednesday.

In this manner (if we win both titles within 3 days), Barcelona can concentrate on preparing for the Champions league for 2 weeks, resting important players.

3 weeks ... 3 titles ...!

This is the situation for Barcelona:

13/05/2009 - Spanish King's Cup: Barcelona Vs Atletic Bilbao

20/05/2009 - La Liga: If the 7 points difference between Barcelona and Real Madrid are maintained, Barcelona wins the league on that day. It could be earlier if Real Madrid lose to Valencia and Barcelona win against Villareal these two days.

27/05/2009 - Champions League: Barcelona Vs Manchester United (in Rome). This would make the perfect end to a wonderful season of fantastic football.

I hope my BARÇA will do it and win all three trophies...

BTW:

These three weeks are also as important to Man. Utd.

They can win two grand titles...

I suggest you read all you can at www.elmundodeportivo.com to get a true perspective of the appalling attitude coming from the pro-Chelsea press. u are actually competing for two trophies!

u cant win them all in one season no matter how much money u spend or how big a squad u have!

till now it was liverpool is just a cup team now that we have become genuine title contenders the manu fans are blowing the trumpet of two trophies together!!

Just wait and c coz every cycle comes to an end resulting in the beginning of a new one and urz is at the end.

remember united went through a league drought for 26 years when liverpool were wining here there and everywhere.

fergie cudnt get a snif of the league title till he had spent 7 years making several record signings of his time before leanding the title

RAFA is only finishing his fifth against the old war horse and has already become the no1 contender for fergies crown who i wud say has atmost 2 years in him before he retires!!!

fergie won it 4 years after our king kenny left his post and was replaced by rookie managers before that he cudnt even get close to liverpool, RAFA has to do it in the presence of FERGIe who is the best manu has to offer and still he is giving him creeps

YNWA

First of all, its manu who despite all their recent suceess still are just try to get to the level that liverpool have already set and the worst thing for manu in this is that in trying to do that they have laden the club with crippling debt, the whiskey nosed aint getting any younger their best players are wrong side of thirties and the young ones want to leave (ronaldo, tevez) or not upto the level(berb, fletch, anderson, nani)

so the thing is despite whatever have u won over the years when liverpool dint compete on domistic front due to financial limitation u r still only goin to draw level on league titles. As for ucl 5>3 plus the best part is liverpool are getting beter while manu can only go down hill owing to various playing staff and non playing staff issues!!

while liverpool have a spine now who have been together for a cpl of years atleast and are the ages where they will stay togetehr for 3-4 atleast at their peak!

so the alarm bells are ringing whether u heed to it or not but thats a fact!!!!

Life is too short to think about the uneditable past and plan about the unpredictable future!!!!!

If there was one consolation for me yesterday or for real football fans, it is that Chelsea got a taste of what it feels like to ruin football game!

With the way they had Barcelona under control yesterday, they should have gone for more, and I am certain they would have had more chances, but NO!

Hiddink decides to ruin beautiful football displays for his so claimed "TACTICAL PLAYING"...!

Hiddink should have learned from Ferguson a big lesson, one day before.

If you have the game in your hands, go for it and don't stop!

Man. Und. Showed why they deserved to go past Arsenal and with excellence... They simply played football!

I would also like to remind the Chelsea fans that one week ago, they were telling Barcelona to stop crying about the official in the 1st leg...

Well, I guess the same message goes back now!

Barcelona with 1 man down, only minutes to go, never lost hope nor faith in playing real football, and they were deservedly rewarded.

The Champion's League got its dream final at the end, and I truly think that no one will be disappointed for whoever wins it. They both deserve to.

Hiddink has always been a spoiler of Spanish football...

Back in South Korea, he led those Koreans to eliminate the Spanish team from the world cup with a boring defensive display! He wanted the penalty shootouts, and he got it!

I don't know what he is thinking this time, but I believe we deserve to see some football being played for a change...

Today Barcelona play Real Madrid in "EL CLASICO"...

Frankly, Barca play more than just a Spanish Derby!

They play for what they have fought all season through...

They play to get past Real Madrid and head for the Legue title, play to raise their spirits and try to overcome Chelsea in three day's time and play so that they can keep a few key players on the bench next week, to have them ready for the Spanish King's Cup on the 12th of May.

If Barca lose today, they may lose everything or at least every major title they wanted this year.

It would be a catastrophic reward for playing the best football in the world.

TODAY IS A GAME BETWEEN REAL BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL & DEPRESSING RESULT ORIENTED FOOTBALL...

May the BEST win...

Although I don't know who I'd want to win it. I enjoy watching Utd, but as a Liverpool fan, I couldn't enjoy them winning it again. I hate Arsenal and Chelsea, and I wouldn't want a foreign team over an English one.

I was very disappointing with the way Chelsea played against Barcelona, but if it does the job, who cares?!

Arsenal showed yesterday why they should not be in the final!

It seems we will have the same final as last year.

I can't believe Getafe let them get away like that!

That Pepe should be banned for life for kicking the opponent's back twice.

Now the pressure is on my Barca! Today they meet Sevilla and without the injured Messi...

Chelsea on the other hand... is all Big money talking... If you look at it as business.. it is a loss making organization.....

The bench strength at Stamford Bridge is next to Zero.. they have not grown any next big thing on their ground till date,,,'

Main reason could be inconsistency in tenure of Managers...

They are not given enough time to think of anything beyond the coming EPL.... There is no long term planning possible in this case...

True... Everton have been performing very consistently for last 4 5 years... but it is being over shadowed by the big 4 in EPL....

S A Fergie says "This team deserves a SilverWare after all the hard work Done till date"....

EPL is diff... FA is very much possible this year...

Unlike Chelsea.. Everton has no pressure to compete in CL or EPL Cup....

And A play like Rooney has risen from the ranks of Everton... HE is there home grown Lad.... it talks about the quality the team has.....

Baldrick2dogs,

What SAF did was very logical to be honest.

If he is to compete in all trophies, he has to use his reserves.

Man Utd have the same problem as Barcelona. They are alive in all competitions, well, three at the moment for now.

If Arsenal do get past Man Utd in the CL, then it will be for that exact reason (exhaustion).

so its possible to do for liverpool however its a tough ask still since its liverpool so its more a possibility then for anyone else!!!

even a 3-1 wud take the game to extra time and penalties possibly!!!

which means its not gloom and doom if chelsea scorees 1

i liverpool get a 1 goal lead by end of 1st half !!

well although Liverpool are extremely competitive I rule them out from this leg. Istanbul was a different story, AC relaxed, Liverpool didn't have anything to lose etc etc. Chelsea ain't going to relax, they will still fight for the win and Liverpool will be happy if he can just scrap a win in the second leg, but beating a team like Chelsea by 3-0, looks extremely unlikely to me!

Manu however have a better chance. They need an away goal and they'll have a good chance. But Porto have shown them that they can also play good football and score goals. Will be an interesting game to watch!

Anyway, come on Barca!!!!

In the news yesterday there was a piece about Fergie giving Ronaldo a kick up the jacksie for giving the ball away too often. Berb is a lazy tw@t!

Rooney and Tevez make a better pairing and can run rings around any defence, with Giggsy and Three Lung Park running the wings.

Rio is doubtful and Neville seems to have lost the plot, so we need to sort out that defensive gap.

I am a huge Barcelona supporter. And even though anything can happen in 90 minutes of futbol I think Barcelona has the best chance to win it all....and three trophies this season will be extra nice. It will be a nice parting season for Henry since he is sure to be sold so we get some cash for him and we can bring in Ribery or Benzema.

I am also a Barca fan, not only a fan but a season ticket holder for 21 years, and I have faith in this team. If we play the way we have been playing lately, there is no team in the world which could beat us on a two leg. The final is another matter. In 90 minutes and when two of the best teams in Europe are playing, anything can happen. But Barca are playing the best football in years and this should prevail!!

Unless United can get Rio back into action quickly their defence is going to struggle. They need to go to Porto and score one more than them. To do this they need to flood the pitch with stikers and keep running at them.

Liverpoo's defence however is even worse based on last night's performace. Bye Bye Scouse!

It's almost certain that Chelsea and Barcelona are through to the semis, and both are strong enough to go on and win the competition.

I can't see either Villareal or Porto going on to win it if they get through to the semis though.

But if United and/or Arsenal go through, either one of them could go on and win it.

So I think the winner will come from one of those four; Chelsea, Barcelona, United, Arsenal.

Barcelona look pretty unplayable when they play like last night.

I'm a Liverpool fan myself, and unfortunately do not see us getting past Chelsea now. Although I reckon if we did, we'd have a reasonable chance against Barca with Rafa in charge.

Thought Chelsea played very well last night, and unfortuntely you can never write United off!
