I beg to differ about being stereotypical.....actually where I am presently living in Wales - "butt" is a typical term for buddy-old-pal.....like:

Come over here butt....or.....can you get me a drink butt?....or even better....you are a really butty boy! No insult in that now is there! Go ahead Sandy..use the word butt...we understood it!
