Jesus didn't treat women secondary to men but the ensuing Christian religions certainly did. It seems that men were in charge and chose to interpret the religion in such a way as to keep them in charge. I don't know about the other reasons but suspect that the same is true. Men were bullies and wanted to keep all the power for themselves. I think it was more to do with that thean religion itself.
