Whether any religion or preachers say it or not, I think it is completely unacceptable for a man to raise hand on a woman. In fact, even talking to women in a harsher tone or with a raised voice is a serious offence. I am not saying just for the heck of it, but cos I really do practice it.
Any man resorting to such tactics is a clear sign of his weakness.
