On a US Driving licence you shouldn't be allowed on the roads, however.
On the US or homecountry driving licence you can drive for 7 days from Arrival in Qatar on a Rental Car. And it varies but 1 month to 3 months with an International Drivers Permit brought with you from your home country.
Some insurance like companies like QIC will allow you to drive non rental cars aon the same basis.
I think you can get a Temporary Qatar Driving Licence with in 7 days, and as your licence is US, they should just give you a Qatari one without taking a test. Not sure how long this is valid for, but as soon as your RP is done it can be upgraded. Or if you leave and it expires you can apparantly go back to the police station and get the temporary one renewed (e.g. you visit for 2 weeks every 6 months)
