start giving him update whats going around office. did he like gossiping too? in this case make 10 minutes spare time each morning and give him all the info. soon he will get irritate with your behaviour and once he talk to you about this, say it that "i thought you want to know all the up-date boss"  "just trying to do my job" see his reaction then..
