Yes parents should love their children and have their best interests at heart, etc; however, a parent is still a human being with needs and desires and I wouldn't expect any parent to be completely self-less and sacrifice everything just for the child's sake. It's just not fair.
As for love at infancy, not all mothers love their children right from birth. Some women go through postpartum depression and start having all those awful thoughts about killing their infants. With therapy and help from everyone around, those women can turn out to be the most loving mothers.
