American English is a function of anti-French sentiment in the early 19th century. The idea was to anglicize the English language.

Approximately 50% of English words are derived from French so to anglicize we changed it a little:

French      American English

Centre  =  Center

Coleur   = Color

Honeur  = Honor

and so on. Of course we didn't like the brits much then either on account of their taxation without representation policies so if changing the language annoyed them, then so much for the better.
