going by pure statistical trends, no black person has come as far as Obama has. Jesse Jackson ran twice, but didnt get nominated, Colin Powell was a favorite in 96, but he didnt run! Alan Keyes tried in 2000, for the Republicans, but that didnt go too well either. And last time Sharpton and Braun had a pretty dismal try.
One thing I will say though.. The youth of America are ready for a black president, they've been exposed to the possibilities by Hollywood, and suddenly its not such a frightening concept for them. If you've watched 24 (the series), the president has always been a black person, for all 6 seasons. So that says something about the mentality of the people. 40% of the U.S. population is white and they have nearly 80% of the representation in Congress.
There are lots of people open to the idea, but, what goes on inside the privacy of the voter's booth, to make that final decision, you just cant speculate on that.
