We kept our local number and use a regular ol' telephone. I love it!
We used Skype (with the video camera) for several months while I was still in the U.S. and my husband was here. It was good because he could see the kids and me, but it was a pain in the butt for me because the video aspect tethered me to the computer. . .I couldn't even multi-task because the camera was rolling. The calls were dropped a *lot*, too. . .as in at least twice in a 20-minute conversation.
My verdict is to use Vonage for your normal calls to the U.S. and use Skype for the special ones (grandma & the kids).
This may all be null and void, of course, if you are not from the U.S.!
