My rent contract says that I need the landlord's permission to renew it when it expires.

It's not indefinite. Even if I want to renew it, I need their permission. I think there is even a clause in there that says they (Al Ashmakh) can renegotiate the rent at any price - ie they can put the rent up by any amount they choose.
