a slave is only really a slave when he understands that he is a slave to his master. all he needs is the mental clarity to see that and his bonds fall off. apparently Orwell wrote once as he saw a donkey being whipped that : "my god if these animals could only understand how strong they are and how much power they could hold over us, the human race would be finished".
