I was born in Cape Town and share your views on the beauty that the country offers. You do however have to be realistic - crime is huge. Just visit news24.com (a credible on line news carrier) and read what happens on a daily basis. We should not bury our heads in the sand. Every person I have ever met in South Africa knows of someone in the family (close or married into) who has been a victim of crime. You are not correct to say that the newspapers focus on negatives. These are facts and should not be ignored simply because we do not like to hear them. On average 50 people die every as a result of criminal behaviour - this is not negative, it is a fact!!
You say the government is taking criminals on - How should we interpret this? Is it perhaps to mean that the Government is employing criminals? I certainly do not see how else your statement should be interpreted as I have no evidence of how they are actively fighting crime.
It is a shame that such a beautiful country is being ravaged by lawlessness, violent crime and corruption. I sincerely hope it will be able to recover from the current scourge of criminality and violence.
